Do you know why there's a street called Alcatraz in Oakland/Berkeley?

I didn't. At least not for the years I lived in Berkeley, mere blocks from Alcatraz Avenue. It wasn't until last year, when I was driving down Alcatraz, was the answer staring straight at me. Duh! It gets its name from the fact that you get an amazing clear view of The Rock as you head west down the avenue. It's such a straight shot that it looks like if you were to extend the street all the way into the bay, it would connect with Alcatraz Island.
