The Gayest Foods Available During Pride Weekend
In San Francisco, the pride for Pride extends into many delicious items you can put in your mouth! Keep the party going with these impossibly sophisticated culinary suggestions:
Penis and Venus Cookies at Hot Cookie
This tiny Castro shop has made chocolate covered coconut macaroons in naughty shapes all the rage for years. They’re always a conversation piece/icebreaker with strangers (see photo above), especially when given with a pair of Hot Cookie underpants.
No One Sucks It Like a Straight Man from Texas at Red Door Cafe
Everything on the menu at this quirky breakfast spot (with posted rules like “don’t be a douche”) has a quirky or lewd reference, from the appetizers labeled “Ass-a-Teasers” to the entrees, or “Big Load Specials.” The craziest one is a BBQ pulled pork sandwich served with a fried onion and spicy tomato “jizz” on sweet “bubble” buns. Where’s the shower?
Rainbow Macarons at La Boulange
Get all the hues of the rainbow flag in La Boulange’s Pride macaron box, which comes out once a year for the celebration. Where Hot Cookie’s macaroons are cookies made of coconut, these are French macarons, light and airy sandwich cookies made with almonds (see photo above). One dollar from each box of Rainbow Macarons sold at La Boulange will go to the Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation.
The Liam Mayclem at Subs Inc. and Hotel Rex
Out and proud local broadcaster Liam Mayclem (aka Foodie Chap), who will be hosting the main stage festivities at Pride with comedian Marga Gomez from 1-5 p.m., has two different items named after him in San Francisco. His dish at Subs Inc. features a nod to his familial roots with the inclusion of Irish cheddar on a turkey, cranberry, and tomato sandwich served on Dutch crunch, while his namesake cocktail at Hotel Rex features Mt. Gay rum (get it?), ginger beer, and muddled lime — a take on the traditional Dark and Stormy.
Rainbow Surprise Frozen Greek Yogurt at Souvla
This Hayes Valley cafe specializes in spit-roasted meats served in pita bread or salad and heavenly frozen Greek yogurt, which they’re topping with “Rainbow Surprise” (aka Fruity Pebbles and Froot Loops) from June 24-29 (see photo above). The San Francisco LGBT Center will receive $1 donation from each cup sold.
Bear Bait at Three Twins Ice Cream
The newly-reopened Three Twins shop in the Lower Haight is back in time to scoop its annual Pride flavors for the weekend — don’t miss Bear Bait, a rapturous combo of honey and peanut butter. If that’s not your bag, other options include Two Tops Don’t Make a Bottom (vanilla with blueberry muffin tops) and Tea Bag (Earl grey). There are also a few new flavors on board this year – but we were scared to ask what they were when we heard that one of them is called Taint It Delicious.
Harvey Milk and Honey Graham Cracker Ice Cream at Humphry Slocombe
The good folks at HumpSlo have a milk flavored ice cream spiked with blackberry honey-drenched graham crackers. It’s a beautiful and subtle tribute to the late politician and activist that was created to honor the first Harvey Milk Day (May 22, 2009). As they like to say at this bustling ice cream empire, lick that!
Rainbow Pasta at Precita Park Cafe
Precita Park Cafe is bringing back its beloved rainbow pasta for Pride Weekend, but this time there are two choices — rainbow pappardelle with ricotta, pumpkin seeds, and pomegranate or rainbow orecchiette with seafood puttanesca. There’s also a grass-fed, eight-ounce Hunky Bear burger with Roma tomatoes and “secret sauce.”
The Bold Italic is hosting our second annual Pride party, Big Gay Birthday, this Friday, June 27. Get tickets and details here.
