I love county fairs, and my favorite local one has to be the Sonoma-Marin County Fair because of its annual World's Ugliest Dog contest.

The winners of the contest are usually cute-ugly, and often breeds that are just generally a little weird looking to begin with (like the Chinese Crested). But the 2014 World's Ugliest Dog is neither. This year's winner, Peanut, is a two-year-old chihuahua-shitzu mix whose hideous mug has a bittersweet story. Peanut wasn't born ugly, but was a victim of animal abuse. He was seriously burned as a puppy, causing bald patches as well as the loss of his lips and eyelids – which means his eyes constantly water. His owner, Holly Chandler, told Time that she entered Peanut into the World's Ugliest Dog competition to bring attention to animal abuse, and hopes to use the $1,500 prize money to help other people in need pay for veterinary bills.

Peanut was crowned World's Ugliest Dog on Friday, June 20.
