The Wizard of Oz Goes Drag at the Castro Theatre This Saturday
We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore. Peaches Christ (who was a performer at our Big Gay Birthday party on Pride weekend) is presenting a live-action drag-parody of The Wizard of Oz, to be followed by a screening of the classic Judy Garland film.
Christ’s take is called The Wizard of Odd and is about 75 minutes long. It’s a similar story, but with a dash of local flavor. Instead of a tornado, a devastating San Francisco earthquake sends the main character, Peachy Gale, played by Christ, deep under the earth’s surface to the land of Odd. Platform shoes covered with jewels replace the red ruby slippers, and yellow bricks adorn a stage instead of a road. The Wicked Witch is still wicked though, and played by Sharon Needles, who won season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Also starring are Heklina, Suppositori Spelling, and Raya Light, among others.
An important note: This particular Wizard of Oz screening is not rated PG. The drag show has some adult content, so children under 13 won’t be permitted.
