In case you haven't heard, a bunch of awesome people bought the old Rio Theater in Monte Rio (the little town past Guerneville on the Russian River) and are doing some really fun programming around film and events in that cool bunker looking space. This Saturday, for instance, they're hosting a special round of American Tripps ping pong on the lawn during the afternoon (with old school hip hop courtesy of DJ Samala) and a screening of the new film Ping Pong Summer at 8 p.m. I mean, the Russian River is the best way to feel the sun 'round here this summer, and now you can play some ping pong too? Yes. Just yes.
There's a $5 ticket that includes admission to the Rio lawn (where they'll have food and drinks) and optional participation in "Berlin-style" ping pong at 5 p.m. (practice anytime on open tables).
Admission to the 8 p.m. screening of Ping Pong Summer can be purchased separately at the Rio box office.
For the pong ballers out there, there's also a $20 "Tournament Package," which the theater folks explain includes: admission to the Rio lawn, a commemorative "Rio Theater" ping pong paddle, registration for the Ping Pong Tournament at 3 p.m., and a chance to win a variety of prizes including a paddle autographed by the "Queen of Ping Pong" Susan Sarandon and a copy of Everything You Know is Pong, by Roger Bennett and Rio co-owner Eli Horowitz. Ticket price also includes admission to the 8 p.m. screening of Ping Pong Summer.
All tickets can be purchased here (and they come with a free medium soda) or you can grab them after your river swim at the door.
And in case you need some instruction on playing Berlin style ping pong, here's a cheat sheet from American Tripps' Allan Hough.
