The Stud Celebrates Its 45th Anniversary

Last night, Pride festivities started a day early at The Stud's 45th anniversary party. I stopped by to have a drink, watch the drag show, and take a few pics.

The Stud first opened its doors in 1966 but moved in 1987 to its current location (formerly called The Arena.) In this location,  The Stud  became the original home of the famous drag show TrannyShack, featuring the ever-fabulous Heklina.

Every famous drag queen in the city has graced the stage at The Stud. Even drag queen-in-training Lady Gaga made an appearance back in 2008.

Although TrannyShack has changed venues, The Stud still hosts some of the best drag shows in the city and last night's celebration was nothing short of fantastic!

Upon my arrival at The Stud, I realized that I had never seen a proper drag show before. I was amazed by the wide range of performers and as I learned from reading today's story " Faux Real ," there is a thing called "perfomance drag," which is not about passing as a woman, but about the performance, the make up, and the fun of drag.

Amongst the performances, there was also a belly dance duo called Azure and a burlesque style strip tease by Dr. Bordello.

This queen loves wigs so much, she performed with nothing else on!

Phatima Rude had a creepy Uncle Fester style and wore a onesie -- very strange but entertaining.

My favorite Queen of the evening was the beautiful, Honey Mahogany. Not only is she stunning, the girl can sing!

For more drag action at The Stud, stop by tonight for " Some Thing!," featuring performances by Glamamore, VivvyAnne ForeverMORE!, Lil Miss Hot Mess, Hoku Mama Swamp, Miss Rahni, and Ambrosia Salad at 11 p.m. and midnight.

This Weekend's Rut Busters Make Us Proud

So, you know already that it's Pride this weekend, right? If not, perhaps our Bingo cards clued you in? There are a lotta activities in place to help break your routine in the next couple days, regardless of what gender(s) get you all flushed and blushed. Here's a lucky seven list of favorite events pulled from the batch of weekend distractions.

Come to Our Party! (Fri.)

There's nothing like starting the weekend with free beer. In a submarine. Built into the new Mollusk on Valencia St. Come say hi at our Voyager Pre-Opening Party (from 6-8 p.m.) have a drink, check out art and clothes and surfboards and people and stuff. It's free. Just RSVP (rsvp@thebolditalic.com).

Go Back to Music School (Thurs. & Fri.)

GraffEats is doing another clandestine meal with a music theme, and this time they're pairing with a crew from Copenhagen. They're holing up in a high school library, so you can get your Breakfast Club on for dinner. Or something. (My suggestion: sit near whomever most resembles Bender).

Stag on the Square (Sat. & Sun.)

Stag Dining Group is hosting another delicious sounding dining event in a mysterious (and I hear luxurious) location near Alamo Square. These dudes are tons of fun to dine with.

Flash & Pop (Sat.)

Michael Jackson dance classes and flash mob. Need I say more? (Other than the mobs will perform four times at four locations between 3 and 6 p.m.)

Go to the (Rock) Opera (Sat.)

The Who's magical rock opera, Lifehouse, will be performed in all its glory by local band Mushroom.

Six is the Magic Number (Sun.)

Hard French's Pride party, Los Homos, looks massive in size and fun. Big Freedia alone should be worth the $20 admission for this party starting at 2 p.m., but add in Nick Waterhouse, Erase Errata, plus more, and you have a six-part dance extravaganza worth being proud of.

Pool Parade (Sun.)

Juanita MORE!'s pool parties are the stuff of legend. Twelve hours of music from top shelf DJs should transform even the coolest Juneuary afternoon into a hotty version of a Palm Springs staycation.

Young, Broke, and Beautiful - The Premiere

Broke-ass01

Last night Broke-Ass Stuart threw a party at Public Works to celebrate the premiere of his new travel show on IFC, Young, Broke & Beautiful. The celebration promised free beer, DJs, and a screening of an episode of the series, which had Stuart exploring the broke-ass underbelly of New Orleans.

When we rolled up to Public Works, there was a line that snaked around the block. Even the bikes were lined up along the wall.

Broke-ass02

Once inside, we were greeted by some familiar friendly faces. The ever-crafty Kelly Malone and the Workshop girls were busy making beer cozies for those free beers that they were giving out for donations.

Gangs of San Francisco and other vendors were also there, selling their cool wares.

Things were getting crowded and sweaty up in the space, but everyone was patiently waiting for the man of the hour to introduce his show.

And here he is, with Found Local Ruggy Joesten.

Before the screening, Stuart explained that the event was his way of saying thanks for the support and love. Thanks, Broke-Ass! And good luck with your new show!

Lighting Up The Night

Saturday, I attended the launch party for Empowered By Light, a new nonprofit with the mission of delivering renewable energy light sources to people without access to power. Held at the SOMA club Roe, the event was sold out, making me feel decidedly more A-list than usual. The sizable crowd was probably due in large part to the presence of Adrian Grenier, the star of the series Entourage, who was co-hosting the event with his business partner and SHFT.com (a start-up dedicated to making eco-living cool) co-founder Peter Glatzer. SHFT is partnering with Empowered By Light on a project to distribute 5,000 solar-powered LED light / cell phone charge kits to rural families in Zambia.

This wasn't my usual scene, but I was digging the eco-friendly VeeV cocktails (a Brazilian Acai-derived spirit) and did my best to hold my own with the San Francisco green and clean technology scene. My wife Jessica, who had a part in the event, pointed out local green VIPs for me, including founder of SF-Based Lemnis Lighting Warner Philips (responsible for the LED light / cell phone charge kit headed to Africa), Opower VP of Marketing Ogi Kavazovic, green event producer Nadine Weil, and Empowered By Light co-founders Marco Krapels and Moira Hanes.

It was a fun night out that raised money for an important cause. It also reminded me that San Francisco is a hub for many businesses and organizations that are setting the bar for sustainability and energy efficiency for the rest of the world. That's pretty cool.
