Thanks to all who came out on Friday to our Pre-Opening Party for Voyager, the new space within the split-up Rosenthal Gallery featuring outposts by Mollusk, Patchwork, and Revolver.

I got there a little early to take a look inside and snap some photos before the guests arrived. It's such a cool space with fun little details.

When the party started at 6 p.m., Jennifer and I had a great time meeting all the folks who came in to check out the space and do a little shopping, and of course, imbibe a few free drinks. Lots of friendly people were on hand to enjoy the final hours of the perfectly sunny day.

Mixtape Mondays: NFR01 Solstice

"NFR01 Solstice" photo by Neil Krug

Pedro Hernandez is a co-founder of and contributor at Night Fog Reader, a San Francisco based music and culture blog. He and his good friend, our very own Bold Local Michelle Broder Van Dyke, launched Night Fog Reader in March of this year to share their love of local music, fun parties, and whatever else has them pumped. Pedro listens to all kinds of stuff and can get into just about anything, but definitely likes a healthy dose of 80's R&B and soul. His mixtape brings together songs from exciting local acts and up-and-comers, along with some tracks that are getting major playtime at local DJ nights and parties.

Here is Pedro's summertime inspired mixtape, called "NFR01 Solstice."

1.  Bushel Hyde— Jessica Pratt
2.  Let's Start Over— The Ringleaders
3.  Laughing The Whole Time— Dominant Legs
4.  Like Flies on Sherbert— Alex Chilton
5.  In This Filthy City— Part Time
6.  Gypsy Town— Wet Illustrated
7.  Are You Loving?— Brand Image
8.  Clubhouse— Magic Touch
9.  You Made a Believer Out of Me— Ruby Andrews
10.  Too Late (Blind)— Pamela

If you're looking for fun and want to hear some of these jams while out and about, check out these parties:
"Lost & Found"—a 60's soul night every Tuesday at the Make-Out Room.
"2 Men Will Move You"— a disco, boogie, and new wave night every second Saturday of the month at Amnesia.
"Hard French"— an afternoon soul party every first Saturday of the month at El Rio.

The Stud Celebrates Its 45th Anniversary

Last night, Pride festivities started a day early at The Stud's 45th anniversary party. I stopped by to have a drink, watch the drag show, and take a few pics.

The Stud first opened its doors in 1966 but moved in 1987 to its current location (formerly called The Arena.) In this location,  The Stud  became the original home of the famous drag show TrannyShack, featuring the ever-fabulous Heklina.

Every famous drag queen in the city has graced the stage at The Stud. Even drag queen-in-training Lady Gaga made an appearance back in 2008.

Although TrannyShack has changed venues, The Stud still hosts some of the best drag shows in the city and last night's celebration was nothing short of fantastic!

Upon my arrival at The Stud, I realized that I had never seen a proper drag show before. I was amazed by the wide range of performers and as I learned from reading today's story " Faux Real ," there is a thing called "perfomance drag," which is not about passing as a woman, but about the performance, the make up, and the fun of drag.

Amongst the performances, there was also a belly dance duo called Azure and a burlesque style strip tease by Dr. Bordello.

This queen loves wigs so much, she performed with nothing else on!

Phatima Rude had a creepy Uncle Fester style and wore a onesie -- very strange but entertaining.

My favorite Queen of the evening was the beautiful, Honey Mahogany. Not only is she stunning, the girl can sing!

For more drag action at The Stud, stop by tonight for " Some Thing!," featuring performances by Glamamore, VivvyAnne ForeverMORE!, Lil Miss Hot Mess, Hoku Mama Swamp, Miss Rahni, and Ambrosia Salad at 11 p.m. and midnight.

This Weekend's Rut Busters Make Us Proud

Juanita MORE! photo by Aaron Plant

So, you know already that it's Pride this weekend, right? If not, perhaps our Bingo cards clued you in? There are a lotta activities in place to help break your routine in the next couple days, regardless of what gender(s) get you all flushed and blushed. Here's a lucky seven list of favorite events pulled from the batch of weekend distractions.

Come to Our Party! (Fri.)

There's nothing like starting the weekend with free beer. In a submarine. Built into the new Mollusk on Valencia St. Come say hi at our Voyager Pre-Opening Party (from 6-8 p.m.) have a drink, check out art and clothes and surfboards and people and stuff. It's free. Just RSVP (rsvp@thebolditalic.com).

Go Back to Music School (Thurs. & Fri.)

GraffEats is doing another clandestine meal with a music theme, and this time they're pairing with a crew from Copenhagen. They're holing up in a high school library, so you can get your Breakfast Club on for dinner. Or something. (My suggestion: sit near whomever most resembles Bender).

Stag on the Square (Sat. & Sun.)

Stag Dining Group is hosting another delicious sounding dining event in a mysterious (and I hear luxurious) location near Alamo Square. These dudes are tons of fun to dine with.

Flash & Pop (Sat.)

Michael Jackson dance classes and flash mob. Need I say more? (Other than the mobs will perform four times at four locations between 3 and 6 p.m.)

Go to the (Rock) Opera (Sat.)

The Who's magical rock opera, Lifehouse, will be performed in all its glory by local band Mushroom.

Six is the Magic Number (Sun.)

Hard French's Pride party, Los Homos, looks massive in size and fun. Big Freedia alone should be worth the $20 admission for this party starting at 2 p.m., but add in Nick Waterhouse, Erase Errata, plus more, and you have a six-part dance extravaganza worth being proud of.

Pool Parade (Sun.)

Juanita MORE!'s pool parties are the stuff of legend. Twelve hours of music from top shelf DJs should transform even the coolest Juneuary afternoon into a hotty version of a Palm Springs staycation.
