Valentine's Alternatives: Romance Optional

Oh no. It's the week before Valentine's Day and you either forgot to make reservations or you are trying not to vomit from everyone else's obnoxious lovebird plans. Even if you have someone to celebrate with, the over-hyped holiday can still be quite taxing. BUT the good news is that this city embraces the day of love with so much more then chocolates, roses, and heart shaped everything. Here in San Francisco we know that you don't have to be normal and boring, you can be fun and think outside the box. If you want want to spend your day making stinky cheese, go to a secret sing-a-long, or dance your ass off to modern soul, there is an event happening within the week just for you. Plus, you can attend these events with or without a significant other. Everybody wins!

Here are six events happening before or on Valentine's Day that may tempt you:

Sat. Feb. 9: Nothing says "I love you" quite like homemade cheese. Wait, that's not how the saying goes. But it could if you are a lover of cheese and want to make a gift by hand for your honey. Join The Cheese School of San Francisco for a class where you'll make two different versions of ricotta, one heart shaped and one soaked in marc de vin. For once, you'll be prepared with a thoughtful (and delicious) gift, instead of last-minute rummaging through Walgreen's sad card section and stale Whitman Samplers (who actually enjoys those?)

Trust2

Mon. Feb. 11: Trust and reputation go hand in hand in all of our relationships, not just ones that affect the bedroom. Join The Bold Italic and The General Assembly for Just Trust Me, an exciting event at Public Works. We will dive into how startups build trust into the core design and function of their products and how design can be used to inspire confidence and convey a sense of ease. Tickets include a free drink, chocolate, and snacks. Who doesn't love snacks?

Thurs. Feb. 14: The awesome MOM SF (Motown on Mondays), Sweater Funk DJs, and The Bold Italic will be throwing down amazing beats at Love Bitten X Love Smitten so you can shake it like a salt shaker on Valentine's Day proper. Along with amazing jams straight off the original wax, rising star vocalist Ziek McCarter will also be belting it out at Harlot. Champagne specials, sweet bites, and epic tunes. Buy tickets here

Icona_pop_-_i_love_it_(sick_individuals_remix)

Thurs. Feb 14: If Motown and funk just aren't your thing (we would rather have you party with us, but don't worry, we don't judge) you can always dance like a maniac to some kick-ass Swedish pop at Rickshaw for Popscene's weekly Thursday party. Icona Pop along with K Flay will help you boogie down on V-Day. If you haven't heard their infectious single, go listen here. No, like really, go. Tickets can be found here.

Purple_rain_cloud

Thurs. Feb 14: If you don't feel like dancing and you don't feel like eating (wait, who are you?) maybe you feel like singing? Join other songbirds at The Roxie for its Super Secret Valentine's Day Sing-a-Long

Pssst...I think the movie is Purple Rain.

A_good_day_to_die_hard_2

Thurs. Feb. 14: And if one of these options still doesn't work for you, go sit in the dark with a bunch of guys who have been counting down the days. No, not for Valentine's Day, but for the release of A Good Day to Die Hard, the fifth installment in the Die Hard series. There is sure to be lots of guns, car chases, too-old Bruce Willis, and overly used lines like "Yippee-ki-yay mother Russia" (whaaaaaaat?) Hey ladies, maybe this is the new way to meet dudes.

Whatever you decide to do, just know there are lots of options out there. Go alone or grab a friend and get funky.
