SUMMARY:Selections: Works from Hospitality House’s Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Hospitality House’s Community Arts Program (CAP) is pleased t
o invite you to the group exhibition Selections: Works from Hospitality Hou
se’s Permanent Collection\, featuring works created by Tenderloin communi
ty artists utilizing the free-of-charge fine arts studio and gallery tempor
arily housed at the Luggage Store Gallery\, 1009 Market Street at 6th Stree
t.\n\nSince 1969\, CAP has been providing resources and exhibition space to
artists who might not otherwise have access to them. This exhibition showc
ases a range of works produced at the CAP throughout our history. “One o
f the remarkable things I witness on a daily basis is how the artists that
use the studio are able to temporarily overcome the hardship they endure to
produce outstanding works\,” said Ivan Vera\, CAP Program Manager. “Wh
at I find curious is how when the brain and the hand are focused on the tas
k-at-hand the emphasis shifts from the artist’s day-to-day struggles to a
personal appreciation of his or her creative achievements.” Through crea
 tivity\, adversity dissipates\, self-esteem is built\, and self-sufficiency
is strengthened\, key components to Hospitality House’s mission.\n\nThis
special retrospective spans more than 43 years\, featuring works by notabl
e artists throughout the history of the program\, including: James Scoville
 \, Jeff Roysdon\, Stephen McQueen\, Gabriella Bardellini\, Pepe\, Angel Flo
 rentino\, Harry Driggs\, Rose Linda\, Charlotte Redor\, Milo Harkness-Smith
 \, Charlene L. Godard\, James Irvine Taylor/Jolene Spencer\, David Brannam\

 n\, randalljohn\, Elisha Brown\, Marsha Campbell\, Patti Walker\, Janet Wil
 liams\, Steven Harris\, Ronald Barnett\, Athena Landmeier\, Roya Bozeman\,
Ruth Altman\, and others.\n\nSelections runs from February 9 through April
13 with an artist reception on Thursday\, February 9\, from 5 to 8 PM. The
reception is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Ron Garrigues From Beginning to End: A Retrospective of the Last Q
 uarter Century
DESCRIPTION:FEBRUARY 25 - MARCH 31\, 2012\nArtist Reception Saturday\, Febr
uary 25th from 4pm to 7pm\n\n50 years after his groundbreaking solo exhibit
at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor\, Ron Garrigues honors Var
nish Fine Art with a retrospective spanning the last quarter century of cre
ative endeavor.\n\nVarnish Fine Art presents a retrospective solo exhibitio
n of the past 33 years of artwork by Ron Garrigues. “From Beginning to E
nd” features 33 bronze sculptures (Man and Beast Series)\, 33 etchings on
clayboard (the Big Bang Series) and 33 sumi ink paintings mounted on silk
(the Next One Billion Humans 2025 AD Series). Ron Garrigues resonates with
the concerns of 21st Century Mankind\, using his art as a vehicle to bear w
itness to the beginning (the Big Bang) and as a foretelling of a possible e
nd for Man and Nature.\n\nRon Garrigues first gained critical acclaim in th
e art world with his 1961 solo exhibit of sculpture at the California Palac
e of the Legion of Honor. Referencing sculptural skills gained under the tu
telage of Richard Whalen\, Peter Voulkos and Harold Paris and influenced by
the poetics of late 1950’s Beat culture in North Beach\, Garrigues explo
red what he describes as “the lyric purity of form and line.” \n\nHe tr
ekked around the world\, exploring rainforests\, climbing the Andes\, Himal
ayas\, Alps and the Sierra Nevada\, all the while recording the impact of
Man” on “Nature.” His observations on extinction\, overpopulation
and greed in the new millenium form the basis of his art while retaining a
commitment to the beauty of form. Sublime tension\, particularly in Garrigu
es’ series of bronze skulls\, engages the viewer on a visceral level\, dr
iving his message home.\n\nSince 2007\, Garrigues has turned his attention
to the second dimension\, using clayboard and traditional sumi ink material
s to address concerns about the number of humans occupying the planet Earth
and the sustainability\, or lack thereof\, of this unmitigated population
explosion. \n\n“Beauty works for Garrigues… It serves him\, and serves
his message\, and he has got something very serious to say. We can only hop
e that he is heard.” – Thomas Berry (1914-2009)\n

SUMMARY:Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Jim Isermann
DESCRIPTION:Jim Isermann is an artist based in Palm Springs\, California. S
ince receiving his MFA from the California Institute of Arts in 1980\, Iser
mann's artistic output has chronicled the conflation of post-war industrial
design and fine art through popular culture. His functional installations
reclaim a utopian view of the future while revealing the pathos of that fai
led project\, and have maintained an unflagging belief in the beauty of uti
litarian design. Throughout the 1990s Isermann explored traditional handicr
aft techniques (e.g stained glass\, weaving)\, producing works that are una
shamedly beautiful\; a beauty that is integral to the limitations and speci
fic characteristics of fabrication. In 1998\, following a 15-year survey ex
hibition at the University of Wisconsin’s Institute of Visual Arts\, Iser
mann began to use a computer to design manufactured elements. Since then\,
his realized installations and commissions have employed mass-produced ther
 mal die-cut vinyl decals\, plotter-cut Mylar\, ContraVision© ink jet print
 ed vinyl\, and vacuum-formed ABS plastic panels. In 2003\, a 35-foot chande
lier\, custom carpeting\, and furniture were permanently installed in the a
trium of Genentech Hall at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus in San Francisco. \n
\nCurrently\, Isermann divides his practice between producing labor-intensi
ve studio work for gallery and museum exhibitions\, and designing and overs
eeing commissioned projects that involve industrial manufacturing processes
. Most recently Isermann has mounted solo exhibitions at Deitch Projects\,
New York\; Corvi-Mora\, London\; and Richard Telles Fine Art\, Los Angeles.
He has completed commissioned projects for the Hammer Museum at UCLA\, the
Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority\, the Memorial Sl

SUMMARY:Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Wayne Koestenbaum
DESCRIPTION:Poet and cultural critic Wayne Koestenbaum consistently filters
cultural icons through an incisively quirky\, highly personal filter. His
latest book\, The Anatomy of Harpo Marx (UC Press\, 2012)\, is a luxuriant\
, detailed play-by-play account of Harpo Marx's physical movements as captu
red on screen. In the book\, Koestenbaum addresses the thirteen Marx Brothe
rs films\, from The Cocoanuts in 1929 to Love Happy in 1950\, to focus on H
arpo's chief and yet heretofore unexplored attribute—his profound and con
tradictory corporeality. Koestenbaum celebrates the astonishing range of Ha
 rpo's body—its kinks\, sexual multiplicities\, somnolence\, Jewishness\,
"cute" pathos\, and more. Koestenbaum's text moves gracefully from insightf
ul analysis to cultural critique to autobiographical musing\, and provides
Harpo with a host of odd bedfellows\, including Walter Benjamin and Barbra
Streisand. \n\nWayne Koestenbaum has published numerous books of poetry\, f
 iction\, and nonfiction\, including Humiliation (Picador\, 2011)\; Hotel Th
eory (Soft Skull Press\, 2007)\; Best-Selling Jewish Porn Films (Turtle Poi
 nt Press\, 2006)\; and The Queen's Throat: Opera\, Homosexuality\, and the
Mystery of Desire (Poseidon\, 1993). A graduate of Harvard and Princeton\,
he is a distinguished professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and
also a visiting professor in the painting department of the Yale School of
Art.\n\nThis lecture will be followed by a book signing.\n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Etgar Keret and Michael Chabon
DESCRIPTION:Suddenly\, A Knock on the Door\n\nThe short stories of Israeli
writer Etgar Keret (The Nimrod Flipout\, Girl on the Fridge) are among the
more unusual pleasures in contemporary fiction. They really are short\, rar
ely longer than two or three pages\, and while writers from Keret's land ar
e supposed always to be dealing with Serious Things\, Keret's characters ar
e more likely to be found playing cards with dwarfs\, getting stuck onto ce
ilings with Superglue\, or finding miniature zippers in their lover’s mou
 ths. Michael Chabon hosts. \n\ntickets: http://bit.ly/edgar_keret \nPrice:

SUMMARY:Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Thomas Eggerer
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Eggerer was born in Munich\, Germany and studied paintin
g at the Art Academy in Munich. As critic Morgan Falconer describes\, “Eg
gerer fuses abstraction and figuration in paintings\, drawings and collages
which frequently feature strong architectural elements and groups of figur
es. These figures appear to happily inhabit very sunny\, modern times\; yet
his broadly applied\, often candied palette tends to wrench them from thei
r moorings\, leaving them floating\, as if disembodies\, across screens of
colour.” In the mid-1990s\, he collaborated with classmate Jochen Klein o
n a series of conceptually oriented projects dealing with questions of iden
tity and public space. After moving to New York\, Eggerer joined the artist
 s’ collective Group Material. \n\nOne-person exhibitions of Eggerer’s w
ork have been mounted at Galerie Daniel Buchholz\, Cologne\, Germany\; Rich
ard Telles\, Los Angeles\; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art\, Hartford\, Co
nnecticut\; the Kunstverein Braunschweig\, Germany\; Friedrich Petzel Galle
ry\, New York\; and at the Frans Hals Museum in the Netherlands. His work h
as been selected for numerous thematic exhibitions\, including Compass in H
and: Selections from the Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawing
Collection at MoMA in New York\; The Undiscovered Country at the UCLA Hamme
r Museum in Los Angeles\; Baja to Vancouver The West Coast and Contempor
ary Art\, which traveled from the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego t
o the Vancouver Art Gallery and to the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporar
y Arts in San Francisco\; Eggerer/Klein at Printed Matter in New York\; and
Oh Boy\, It’s a Girl Feminismen in der Kunst and Die Utopie des Desig
