Neighborhood: Bernal Heights, The Mission
Gig: Founder & Designer OHIO
Where do you get your local gossip? There is a homeless guy that knows everything that is happening here in the Mission. His name is Tiger Danny.
Where's your go-to date place? Dark and Stormy at 25 Lusk or cold Buds at the Seastar on Third (just closed), but now it is the Brisbane Inn or the 2300 Club.
Why do you love your neighborhood? Well I have the best two neighborhoods in the city. Bernal Heights is where I've lived for five years and The Northeast Mission is where I've worked for the last 15 years. It is a good mix of blue collar and white collar people and a lot of creativity! Everyone seems to look out for each other.
What's your favorite under-the-radar SF restaurant? Everyone has seen it, but few have tried it... Tommy's Joynt on Van Ness. We keep gettin' older and they keep stayin' the same.
What do you get obsessive about here in SF? All of the Not in My Back Yard people (NIMBYs for short). Just because you don't do it, don't prevent others from doing it. For such a liberal city, people sure want to stop people from doing or trying new things. It's all a little too precious sometimes.
What would you change about SF? Get rid of all the haters and reverse Prop 13.
What's next for you in your work/creative world? We are just starting to tell our story of OHIO to the big wide world. I would love to reach more people. I really believe that people can have very high quality of a lifestyle (including furniture) and it not cost a lot of money. I would like to think that what we do is very special. At least it is to me. I love making furniture for people to live their lives with. It doesn't get a lot more personal than making someone's bed (maybe making their pajamas is, but we are not there yet).
