Josh

Neighborhood: The Mission

Gig: Founder and owner of Bernal Cutlery

What are you up to these days? Up to my ears: Three kids and my own business = clocked in. I’m in the middle of expanding my business which is fun (I love getting boxes of knives from Japan and France) but nuts, I’m up every night working till late, then baby Milton wakes up and wants to party at 3:30 a.m. He’s adorable, and the world's smiliest baby, but it’s 3:30 a.m. kiddo.

Who's your favorite quintessential local character? Tom Guido, the old owner of the Purple Onion in North Beach. Back when they had bands play there, he was like Crispin Glover on angel dust.

Where's your secret spot? I’m not gonna say where, but it involves flashlights at dawn, throwing elbows with grumpy old men (and sometimes the lady who owns the vintage kitchen shop on Divisadero), and hopefully digging through musty boxes of antique knives.

What's your favorite under-the-radar SF restaurant? Udupi Palace in the Mission. Or is it well above radar at this point? Great South Indian food, which is not too easy to find, a very different hit than the typical Indian fare you can get.

What's your favorite SF institution? Red's Java House, it’s a little throwback to the old working class side of San Francisco’s waterfront.

What do you get obsessive about here in SF? Washing my hands after getting off MUNI, actually.
