Jon Rueter Musician
is getting worse at saying no
Neighborhood: The Mission
Gig: UCSF Finance Manager by day, guitarist/keyboardist by night
What are you up to these days? Gosh, I'm up to my eyeballs in music right now. I'm helping my friend Rob by playing keyboards with his project Muscle Drum, I have my gay paisley underground band, Puce Moment, and I'm working with James Nestor on launching our AM gold / soul band, Gold Band, LTD this Fall. It's a busy time for me!
What's your favorite SF institution? The Castro Theater wins for being a really special place to see a movie but I'm still kind of sad that the Coronet out on Geary closed. And in a weird way I really love the Metreon. I'm trying to accept the changes that are happening to it but it was sad to say goodbye to the mirrored skill crane room.
Who's your favorite quintessential local character? Marian and Vivian Brown! Has anyone said that one yet? These identical twins who dress alike in snappy outfits are my favorite local characters to run across by far. They're classic quirky SF, not nouveau quirky.
What do you get obsessive about here in SF? Farmer's market bargains. I'm not really one for the Ferry Building unless I'm trying to impress out-of-towners but I really love the Alemany and Heart of the City farmers' markets where I feel like I get amazing produce and a really good deal.
What's your favorite under-the-radar SF restaurant? Hmm, I don't know if it's under-the-radar or not but I love breakfast at Rocco's Cafe in SOMA on the weekends for their blueberry pancakes, SF memorabilia lining the walls, and their never-being-crowdedness.
What would you change about SF? I'd make it five degrees warmer on average and I would ban fake balconies. I see a lot of those, especially on buildings in the Sunset and they drive me insane. What good are they?
