Sunday Morning Coming Down
Recently, I was talking to my friend, Sean Taylor, about how people get over hangovers. I don’t drink alcohol, so I’ve never had to deal with it myself, but Sean explained that San Francisco, with its glorious bar scene, is one of those cities where folks often suffer the repercussions of heavy drinking. I had no idea it was such an ordeal. I just assumed, like with most common ailments, you rest in bed, and after a few uncomfortable hours, your pains go away. Apparently, it doesn’t quite work that way.
You can tell a lot about people in their weakest moments. Experienced drinkers, for example, can be very particular about how they recover from a hard night of partying. Some seek over-the-counter meds, while others are fans of natural curatives. Many believe in the healing powers of bad TV, coconut water, kombucha, or – quite aptly for San Francisco – a plate of greasy, starchy goodness from your local taqueria. Most people, though, swear by a combination of several remedies and rituals. Whatever works, right?
Fascinated by this whole other world I’m not a part of, I asked six San Franciscans to tell me where they do their drinking, what they like to imbibe, and how they recover after they’ve drunk too much at said spot.
Well, now I know why there’s always a line at brunch spots come Sunday morning.
