From the Vault: The Panhandle as a Freeway

BART on the bridge! (1961)

It's always really strange to see yesteryear renderings of San Francisco. I stumbled upon some images of now-defunct transportation plans throughout the Bay, and spent a good chunk of time scrolling through proposed city blueprints from as early as 1866, many of which were eventually vetoed. Who knew, for example, that the Panhandle Freeway was almost a thing? And that BART could've run along Geary? Just think, your North of the Panhandle dwelling could've been covered in tons of asphalt and mowed down by a semi in 1964!
