Local educator Allison SMITH's Arts & Skills Service workshop installation is a flashback to World War II, put on by SFMOMA to "bring together people who have experienced war from the 'home front' with those who have lived it in any capacity, whether deployed overseas or stationed on our soil." The exhibition/workshop will offer some interactive sculpture installations, skill sharing, and public conversations with war trench art as inspiration. And the best part is the workshops are free, including materials. They're doing presentations at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the 18th and 19th, so you'll have plenty of chances to check out some art and learn a thing or two. Email ahead to participate: artsandskillsservice@gmail.com

This show is the last of the Noise Pop series that's taking over The Bold Italic's brand-spankin'-new event space, so it's not to be missed. Goddamn Ponies will perform a live set to accompany the 1920's silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, featuring their indie rock of "sometimes moody and ambient and sometimes loud and explosive" jams. The distorted guitar, electric piano, and tons of reverb will set the haunting scene for the surrealist psychological thriller from Germany in the midst of the 1920s.

8:00pm
Oddball's collection of cinematic expertise this time around takes a gander at the world beyond the space we occupy physically. Using the works of Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges as a foundation, this film anthology shakes up the space-time continuum with a metaphysical journey into the unknown. Including rarities like The Lost World (1925), a prehistoric world that has continued to exist into the present; ancient Mayan and Aztec societies' depiction in First Americans: And their Gods (1969 - Part I); Flatland (1965), an imaginary two-dimensional paradigm; Our World in Review: Arctic Exploration (1936), a journey into the undiscovered wilderness; and the dreamlike fantasy of Dreams of Baron Munchausen (1911). Seating is limited in the Oddball Films headquarters, so claim your seat by emailing programming@oddballfilm.com ASAP.

San Francisco Bay Area-based power quintet Howlin Rain’s third album The Russian Wilds passionately protests the currently popular notion that heroically conceived and executed rock music is a thing of golden ages passed. Having been formed by bandleader-singer-guitarist Ethan Miller in 2004, as a melodic offshoot of blazing new-psych innovators Comets On Fire, Howlin Rain soon caught the attention of uber-producer Rick Rubin, who signed them to his American Recordings label and involved himself deeply in their subsequent musical evolution thereafter. Rubin worked closely with Ethan for over a year and a half as he shaped and perfected the material being written for The Russian Wilds. Finally, the band entered the studio with producer-engineer Tim Green (The Fucking Champs, Nation of Ulysses), tracking at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, as well as at Trilogy Studios and Hyde Street in San Francisco, recording most of the overdubs at Green’s Louder Studios in SF, where Tim mixed the album with crucial input from Rick. Tickets are $12adv., $14 at the door
