Forget Brunch, These Sunday Suppers are Awesome — The Bold Italic — San Francisco

If you’d rather spend your Sunday mornings sleeping in than stuffing your face at a bottomless mimosa brunch, try one of these popular Sunday Night Supper deals around town. Just book your indulgence early — say, by 5 or 6 p.m. — if you have to work the next day.

Paella Night at Smoke, Oil, Salt

Third generation Spanish paella maker Perfecto Rocher (yes, that’s his real name), has a hit on a formerly forgotten stretch of Melrose, serving tapas and other regional delicacies to diners. Just past the tattoo parlor sign you will probably recognize the old Angeli space split into two rooms with a bar and open air kitchen. Chef Rocher has started a Sunday night tradition of serving giant pans of crispy rice paella for two in the true Valencia style with meat, seafood, or veggies during a four-course supper menu. The owners wanted the experience to feel like a tapas bar in Barcelona at midnight, and by 6 p.m. the place is packed with tables clinking glasses of Cava and guests trying to talk over the crowd while they catch a glimpse of Rocher in action.

Fried Chicken at Superba Food + Bread

The sister restaurant to Paul Hibler’s Superba on Rose in Venice was an instant hit when the industrial chic Superba Food + Bread opened this year, serving freshly baked goods and one of the best black rice dishes on the planet. Open for three meals a day, they are also offering fried chicken on Sunday nights. For $21 you can have the slightly spicy, crispy bird served family style along with a collard green slaw and a biscuit made by their pastry chef. It’s enough for two people and you can linger with a bottle of rose since the dry rub recipe with a layering of spices keeps the meat moist and the crust crunchy for hours.

British Sunday Roast at The Pikey

Located in the former Horses Head on Sunset Blvd., The Pikey gastro pub is offering Sunday roasts with all the fixin’s for $22. The menu rotates between beef short ribs, roasts of lamb, pork, and chicken, plus a vegetarian nut roast with braised carrots. Sides range from Yorkshire pudding to hearty duck fat potatoes or market greens with gravy. To really set the tone, try sitting in the quieter back room away from the front of house fray and main bar area. Owner and bar impresario Jared Meisler has been collecting whiskey for a few decades now and shares his rare finds and bounty of impressive labels at the back bar. Study the extensive list and make a night of it along with a new whiskey cocktail menu.

Sunday Night Supper Lucques

Spend your Sunday eve on the patio at Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne’s cozy French eatery in the heart of Melrose. The menu is different every week and sometimes the theme revolves around a book party for Jean-Pierre & Denise Moulle — a former chef at Alice Waters’ celebrated Chez Panisse in Berkley (Goin also did a stint there). Farmer’s market menus usually come out on Friday for the Sunday meal and can be found on their website before you book.
