Last year SOMA Chinese restaurant So (which has some tasty black bean noodles) stirred up controversy with a sign making it very clear that the owner gave zero shits about its gluten-free customers. It would seem So’s head chef has had it once again, as a new sign went up announcing that hard to please customers should hit the road.
After the sign (which has been up for a few months) was posted on Reddit, I called the restaurant to see what inspired this latest bit of exasperation from the owner. Server Robert Wang told me the “hard to please” bit was inspired by “an incident a few months back that the boss couldn’t put up with any more.” He didn’t have the exact details, but he says the sign has helped them in the customer attitudes department. “For the most part, everybody gets it,” he says of the latest posting. “People have gotten better, and lots of people take photos of our signs.”
Frustration with customer and staff attitudes seems to be a common theme with this place among Yelp reviews, but personally I love a restaurant that tells folks straight up to take their BS elsewhere.
Also fun to note: the “hours you wish we were open: 24/7, hours we wish to open Mon to Fri 11 to 3; hours we all can agree on, for the most part.” Just awesome.
