The Bold Italic — a longtime San Francisco online magazine that celebrates the Bay Area — has officially relaunched with a new editor in chief, new look, and nonprofit status.

The announcement today caps off a months-long process of redesigning TBI’s logo and hiring 20 contributors in writing, photography, and video. New Editor in Chief Saul Sugarman has curated a deluge of content that celebrates life in the Bay Area since he took on the role in March.

“I’m excited to spotlight voices who love sharing noteworthy and uplifting experiences about San Francisco and the Bay Area,” Sugarman said. “And I want to stay true to The Bold Italic’s original voice, too,” he added.

The definitive spot for Bay Area first-person perspectives can now be supported through tax-deductible donations.

In December 2022, TBI became a part of GrowSF, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit. And now, The Bold Italic has also partnered with Independent Arts & Media, a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor that will allow people and groups to make tax-deductible donations. Those donations can be made today via TBI’s new Flipcause page.

The Bold Italic began in 2009 with an aim to tell “first-person stories by locals on issues and topics that are on the brains and lips of San Franciscans. We are not a news site. We’re a hub for conversations to be heard and discussed. Some of the pieces we publish will make you laugh. Some will have you nodding your head in agreement. And others will completely piss you off.”

Those goals remain today, with an emphasis on creating more positive content like our recent I Love San Francisco series.

GrowSF directors Sachin Agarwal and Steven Buss remain committed to adding more uplifting stories to our collective conversations.

“We’re constantly flooded with such bad news, and The Bold Italic is a breath of fresh air. It celebrates what’s great about the city,” said Buss.

Agarwal added: “The Bold Italic should celebrate the people, the food, and the cultures of this city. This is why we love San Francisco and we’re working to make it a more inclusive city.”
