I think we can all agree that that was a mostly terrible two weeks with a few bright moments. If you consume news like I do, perhaps you also find yourself conflicted between A) gluing yourself to any available screen and reading everything about every (inter)national crisis; or B) zoning out to cute puppy pictures in hopes of forgetting about the traumatic news cycle for a spell.
So this week, I’m sorting our roundup by your emotional state.
If you want to reflect: Cirrus Wood’s “After Orlando: The Routine of Terror” could just as well be called “After Nice” — it’s a reflection on sensationalism, violence and our peculiar American treatment of terrorism.
If you want to be taken to another world: Peter Arcuni’s “Kayaking with the Crab Fishermen of Bodega Bay” is a photo-enhanced journey to the coast and the austere world of the crabbers who fish by kayak.
If you want to laugh: We bought writer Sarah Miller a $20 “STP” (stand to pee) device and asked her to try it out. She spent a week going around San Francisco and Oakland peeing on stuff. Some people yelled at her; some ignored her; and others assisted her quest to pee in weird places (like the backseat of a car). Read her piece, “I Peed Standing Up for a Week.” If you love the pee stuff, urine good company, as this is actually our second pee-themed piece in two weeks (the first one was about passing a drug test).
If you want to see inside SF: Monroe is an 82-year-old with a green thumb living in an SRO in San Francisco. Formerly homeless, Monroe subsists on a small income and lives to garden. Read his story here.
