RSVPs now open for a special live recording of IRL Podcast on March 18

What is even real anymore, amiright? In this confusing era—when Internet crazy meets insanely polarized politics—it’s become incredibly hard to discern what’s fact and what’s fiction. As we sort through the daily deluge of nonsense the Internet offers us, it’s easy to be left wondering about questions like, “Is the information I’m reading accurate, legitimate or biased?”; “Whom can I trust, and whom should I definitely not trust?”; “Am I talking to a Russian bot right now?”; “What is happening?”
There’s no doubt that fake news played a huge part in the 2016 election and continues to muddy today’s politics and journalism. From “alternative facts” to deliberately misleading “media” sites to viral conspiracy videos, it’s harder than ever to discover the truth online. At the same time, studies have shown that people tend to create and operate in echo chambers online—meaning, what you see on your feed is likely only reinforcing the opinions you already hold.

You’re invited to dig into all of these topics at “Ctrl+Alt+Facts,” a special live recording of IRL Podcast, an original podcast from Mozilla in which host Veronica Belmont explores real stories of life online and real talk about the future of the web. At the live taping on March 18, taking place at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, Belmont and guests will discuss how misinformation is made and spreads, as well as ways that we can all be more critical about the information we consume. Speakers include Sheera Frenkel, who covers “cyber all the things” for the New York Times; Jestin Coler, dubbed the “king of fake news” and founder of DisInfoMedia Inc.; and Renee DiResta, policy lead at Data for Democracy.
It’ll be a fascinating and important conversation—and that’s not fake news.
