Four Dates to Take Your Dog on This Weekend

San Franciscans have the great fortune to live in one of the dog-friendliest cities in the country (in fact, the Huffington Post declared it number one in 2016). I’ve never gone into a Bay Area establishment — with the exception of restaurants — that has not allowed my dog to come with me.

Whether you’re single, have no friends or just prefer time with your dog over all forms of human contact, here are four places to take Fido.

If you’re bringing your dog to a restaurant, ample outdoor seating is a must. Not only does El Rio pass this test, but also their motto is peak dog friendly: “Be Kind, Be Fabulous, Adopt a Rescue, Be Generous, Be Lovely and Feel Loved!!!They’ve even collaborated with Wonder Dog Rescue to offer happ-hour fundraisers.

The Rex Center

This location is a bit of a trek for those in San Francisco or the East Bay, but it’s worth the drive. The Rex Center specializes in dog rehabilitation, but it also offers swimming lessons for nervous puppers — floaties included! The water is warm — unlike the frigid temperature and tumultuous waves of the ocean—and owners can choose between assisted or open swims. It’s also a great option for older dogs, who have a hard time walking and running but still love to get exercise.

Le Marcel Bakery for Dogs

Would it be San Francisco without a bakery specifically for dogs? Would it be San Francisco if said bakery didn’t have “wheat-free” and “grain-free” options? This bakery in the Marina (right?) offers all-natural, homemade treats for the Dogniss Everdeen in your life. In a city that has more dogs than babies, this bakery comes has no surprise.

Parking is sparse; prices are steep; and most of the Yelp reviewers refer to their puppers as “babies” — but the cupcakes are called “pupcakes,” so it’s obviously worth it. If you feel the strong urge to purchase your dog an organic birthday cake, this looks like your strongest option.

Harmonic Brewing

Look no further than Dogpatch for a dog-friendly brewery that also happens to have some of the tastiest, more affordable beers on tap. While we don’t suggest you feed the beer to your furry friend, there’s nothing better than cuddling up with Sir Doggo if the beer blanket isn’t keeping you warm in San Francisco’s winter/summer weather. It’s near the T line, so you won’t even have to worry about driving home.
