People across the country are doing their best to find ways to stay occupied while social distancing. While it’s tempting to bake all the cakes and cupcakes and plop on the couch to watch Netflix (no shame if that’s your game though), we must admit this situation presents a good time to continue working on your fitness or discover that working out is a great way to make the time pass more quickly.

California’s shelter-in-place order doesn’t list gyms as essential businesses, forcing fitness studios and their instructors to turn to virtual classes. Working out through these studios’ online courses is a great way to keep healthy, connect with others online (many are live), and support a local business at the same time.

We’ve compiled a list of Bay Area studios offering workout classes online. If you own a gym or are an instructor offering virtual classes, add your information in the comments section and/or tag us on Twitter or Instagram.

East Bay

Bladium, Alameda

This Alameda fitness club is an affiliate of Les Mills (a fitness program that formed out of Auckland, New Zealand, back in 1968) and has been motivating members with burpees challenges, virtual classes via Zoom, and giving a 30-day trial of Les Mills on demand to anyone, which gives you access to a free library of workouts, including guided meditations, HIIT, dance, and more. Amelia Garcia, the fitness manager at the gym, is also offering donation-based workouts she is recording via Zoom for anyone to access.

Radically Fit, Oakland

This Oakland “body positive community gym for queer, trans, POC, big bodied & fat identified folx and their allies, regardless of experience or ability” — founded by Luca Page, a queer woman of color — offers group classes, such as powerlifting, dance, and boxing. The gym is now posting free workouts on YouTube and keeping followers engaged on Instagram.

Left Coast Power Yoga, Oakland

This beloved East Bay yoga studio is now offering most of their regular classes on Zoom. You can purchase a drop-in online class for $10 or sign up for $49 for one month of unlimited yoga (for new clients.) “We are so grateful to be able to build and see our community every day through our online classes and can’t wait to be practicing together again in the future,” the studio wrote on Instagram.

Namaste Yoga and Wellness, Oakland

Another favorite Oakland yoga studio, Namaste, is hosting nearly all its regular classes online through Zoom. Members and class pack holders sign up as normal, and anyone can pay per class or buy a pack/membership. The studio has a great overview of how to join and get set up on Zoom. “We are striving to support you in your practice and on your journey of life through this challenging time. Our virtual classes are delightful and are more like a real class than you might expect.”

Adeline Yoga, Berkeley

This community-based Iyengar yoga located in Berkeley is now offering 30+ live Iyengar Yoga classes each week for the next month (or as long as needed) via Zoom. “Our classes during this time will focus on quieting the mind, building immunity, creating connection, and keeping our hearts expansive toward ourselves and others,” the studio writes, noting that they’ll use less props since many people don’t have them at home. The studio is also offering tips on Instagram on how to remain calm through this crisis. The studio has updated its pricing during the Covid-19 crisis, including getting three classes for $39 and one month unlimited, no commitment for $135.

Urban Fitness Oakland, Oakland

This gym’s two locations in San Pablo and Oakland are closed, but the community is “crushing live workouts and having a blast,” according to the gym’s website. This is a community-based gym that offers team and semiprivate training. If you’re looking for more of a workout than yoga to burn calories, this is a good one to check out right now. They are offering three live classes per day on a digital platform. Contact the gym directly to get more information.

San Francisco

The Assembly, The Mission

This trendy “women-centered wellness club” located in the Mission was co-founded by Carnet Williams and Molly Goodson to be a membership-based place for people to work, work out, and connect with a community. In light of Covid-19, they’ve launched “The Assembly Anywhere,” where members and nonmembers alike can access live streams of fitness classes (ranging from high-intensity cardio to yoga and core work). Members get these for free and nonmembers can pay $10 per class. The anywhere online option also includes virtual happy hours, book club, and more in the works.

Tribe Fitness and Yoga

This studio on Columbus Avenue is “ranked the number-one fitness class in San Francisco by ClassPass,” according to its website. Right now, the studio is offering two virtual classes a day (HIIT, yoga, and meditating) Monday through Friday. For nonmembers, each class is $35. (There are also new client specials.) The gym is also offering virtual personal training and virtual coaching if you’re looking for more one-in-one support while you’re in isolation. With all the options, you can interact directly with the instructors. “I haven’t interacted with a human person in almost a week, so the community aspect was great,” someone mentioned on the studio’s Instagram page.

Touchstone Climbing

This indoor climbing gym, with 12 locations across California, was founded by Mark and Debra Melvin back in 1995 with its first location in the Mission District. Touchstone is now offering free virtual classes via Facebook, including yoga for climbers and vinyasa. You can take the class live or replay the broadcast later. While the virtual classes are free, the owners are committed to continuing to take care of the staff while the shelter-in-place order is in place. “We will continue to pay our front desk staff and routesetters during this closure. We ask those of you who are financially able to stick with us in these difficult times to continue your memberships,” the message read on the website.

South Bay

FitZone, Milpitas

This gym is posting daily workouts on Instagram and Facebook. Each workout comes with easy-to-follow written instructions no matter your fitness level. While the workouts on Instagram are free of charge, the gym offers several types of memberships, from no contract to monthly memberships or packaged sessions.

WestCA, San Jose

This boutique studio in downtown San Jose offers private and semiprivate training classes and nutrition coaches. The owners are keeping members and other followers engaged by filming workouts and posting them to Instagram. If you are pregnant, they have a lot of prenatal friendly workouts to follow.
