Philz Coffee was opened in San Francisco in 2003 by Phil Jaber — an amiable, chatty fixture in a signature fedora at his cafes — and has since earned the patronage and heart of the Bay Area. From its charming, quirky founder to its unfussy vibes and great coffee, people just love this place — it’s the official drink at Facebook and even the characters on Looking drink Philz.
Now more people will have a chance to feel the coffee love as Philz just closed a $15 million funding round (one of the investors includes Snoop Dogg — respect). Philz’s CEO told TechCrunch about the company’s plans to “grow its footprint beyond California and open at least 10 more locations nationwide by the end of 2015.” To give you an idea of its size now, the coffee company currently has just under 20 Bay Area locations and one outpost in LA.
It will be interesting to see if the cozy feel of Philz Coffee (and the winning personalities of its father son team of Phil and Jacob Jaber, who is the CEO) will translate to places outside of its original home and how people will respond to it nationally. One thing is for sure — people who’ve moved away from the Bay and miss mint mojito ice coffees will be pleased.
