I Hate The Person Who Wrote This CL Ad And You Should Too — The Bold Italic — San Francisco

Eleven days ago someone posted this in the men seeking women section of Craigslist’s San Francisco personals. If it’s real, I weep for humanity. If it’s not real, the joke is depressing so I still weep, but less loudly. San Francisco Magazine did a nice job of decoding what the 26-year-old, Pacific Heights dweller might have meant when he said things like “I am building a global company. I will succeed, because that is what I do.” But I’m still at my desk angrily drinking coffee and cracking my knuckles in preparation for a rant because of other lines that I find to be significantly worse.

Let me be clear, I have no problem with the above average confidence displayed in this post. Sure, it can be embarrassing to read someone describe themselves so aggressively, but I get that this is a personal ad and I think it’s good that people think highly of themselves. Where I started to see red was when the author writes, “I will break the relationship after our first fight. There are thousands of woman who want to take your place and live their dreams.” Here’s the full post:

Are you appropriately disgusted? My biggest problem with this post is that the person who wrote it thinks they are evolved. He goes to great lengths to say he is educated and even puts down some married couples as “less evolved” but his worldview is anything but progressive. The assumption that the way a woman “lives her dreams” is to be with a (potential) billionaire makes me want to break something that this man loves.

This dude seems to know he isn’t supposed to come out and say he’s looking for a trophy wife so he says “you will not be a trophy wife”, but he also says, “Support me, love me, and do everything I want” and oh yeah, no fights or the relationship’s over. To me, it’s clear that this person is looking for a glorified slave, but doesn’t realize it.

I’d guess he wants the woman he buys marries to be vaguely ambitious because the final frontier of hunting for wives is multiple degrees and independent success. I doubt he wrote this post because he especially respects powerful women, it’s because he thinks other men are especially impressed by those conquests. This man probably read that being in a power couple will make him feel like a strong man, but it’s clear to me that even if he does find a Beyonce, he still doesn’t respect or understand women or you know, want to continue to talk to them if they don’t do exactly what he wants. In other words, he sure as hell isn’t a Jay-Z and even if he is a Frank Underwood, that guy is a murderer.
