It’s a Sad Time to be a Pet in San Francisco — The Bold Italic — San Francisco

Moving in San Francisco isn’t something many people look forward to — and it just keeps getting more complicated. A new problem to add to the list: Fewer landlords are accepting tenants with pets, leaving many owners no choice but to surrender their furry friends.

While there’s no official count as to how many tenants have had to give up their pet, the San Francisco SPCA has documented 207 cases since last March, with about half coming from people evicted in the Mission. That’s what appears to be the trend: residents forced out of their homes who then can’t find an area suitable for their pets (not necessarily new residents whose pets aren’t welcome).

The San Francisco SPCA told NBC Bay Area that pet owners should write animals into their lease agreements and also create a resume that highlights their pets’ impeccable medical and behavioral history. While that may sound ridiculous, it lets landlords know your pet isn’t high-risk.

We’ve reached peak SF housing problems if we’re not only being asked to pay $1,425 a month for a 216-square-foot room but also abandoning our animals just to live here. San Francisco, I love you but this is getting to be all sorts of too real.
