Editor’s note: Cinemagraphs are still new enough to seem totally futuristic and magical, even though we’ve had GIFs for what seems like forever. Something about subtle, cycling movement within a still image is both mesmerizing and a little creepy, tapping into sci-fi archetypes of wormholes and people frozen in time.
We asked Marcello Maiorana to create cinemagraphs shot around San Francisco, and the collection captures the city in a strange, dreamy way.
