The Bold Italic readers,
It’s been nearly a decade since this little experiment called The Bold Italic launched with a mission of testing new and different ways to tell stories about life in San Francisco and the larger Bay Area. And while our owners and format may have changed over the years, our genuine commitment to unique storytelling and lifting up new voices has never wavered.
We describe ourselves as an online magazine that “celebrates the character and free-wheeling spirit” of this city. By that we mean exploring all aspects of living here — the serious, the silly, the frustrating, the incredible and the downright absurd. Our writers bring passion, voice and personality to any subject they tackle, whether it’s a personal essay about dating or a thoroughly reported piece about the city’s housing crisis.
In an era of dwindling local journalism and independent publishers, The Bold Italic is proud to remain strongly rooted here. We are a scrappy team of editors and writers passionate about what we do. And today we’re excited to announce that TBI is entering our next chapter with a new editor in chief—Clara Hogan.
Clara is a freelance journalist who joined The Bold Italic staff as a contributing editor earlier this year and has quickly developed an exciting vision for the future of our platform — she’ll share that with you soon. Clara is passionate about the importance of local journalism and expanding the diversity of voices in TBI to better capture what it’s like to live in San Francisco today. We’re excited to have her as our fearless new leader, managing our wonderful team of editors and pool of contributors.
