As a ginger, my life is a constant hunt for shade. Example: on the car ride back from my recent Fourth of July getaway, I had to resort to covering myself in paper towels because the sun coming through the window was really stressing me out and that pivoting visor thing BARELY DOES ANYTHING.
It’s thrilling to finally see the struggles of my people summed up so perfectly in this hilarious parody rap video, “My Ginga” by Oakland’s Calvin Michael West. He spent two solid weeks listening to YG’s “My Ni**a” in his Subaru, and went on to write a version that truly encapsulates daily life of the pigment-dificient.
To see 100 of SF/Oakland’s ginger community come together to shoot such a beautiful music video… I’m not crying, I just have sunscreen in my eyes.
