One of the reasons you buy stuff online is because it’s convenient, but we’ve all experienced the inconvenience of trying to be around when your package is actually delivered. Some of us are lucky when we can have deliveries sent to work, but not everything makes sense to send to your office, especially big, bulky packages you don’t wanna lug back home. Well, two dudes in San Francisco got sick of all those “Sorry We Missed You” notices and decided to make an app to ensure all that crap you ordered online (but can’t really afford) gets directly into your hands, exactly when you want it.
Doorman, a new app created by Zander Adell (former Pixar guy) and Kapil Israni, allows users to choose the day and time they want their packages delivered. You can schedule delivery to your door up until midnight, which is great for people who work late nights.
When users use Doorman, they send packages to a Doorman shipping depot address instead of their normal address. They get an online notification from Doorman when their package has arrived at the depot, and then users can schedule delivery time via the app. Another cool thing about Doorman — should your delivery come when you’re out of town, it will hold your package for up to six weeks at their “secure and climate controlled” depot.
But before you get too excited, there’s a price for the convenience (duh). The service costs $7 per delivery, (plus extra fees for things that weight more than 40 pounds or measure more than three feet a side). Currently, as a promotion, you can get free delivery if you tweet @doorman_it with #free or post something (nice) on Doorman’s Facebook wall — not bad!
At this time, Doorman is only available in San Francisco.
