San Francisco used to be full of artists and hippies. Then tech happened. That doesn’t mean that all creativity has been lost in the fog, though. Indeed, city dwellers still find their own ways to tap into their creative sides—like mixing the Millennial obsession of festivals with death and creating a week-long “festival of death.”

Festival of Death Starts This Week

Do you like Frances McDormand? Do you like death? Well, you’re in luck. This weekend starts a week-long death festival in the city called Reimagine End of Life. It’s like Sketchfest, but comedy is substituted for conversations about and activities related to death. What does Frances McDormand have to do with all of this? Well, as part of the festival, she’s performing in a play at the Castro Theatre. NBC interviewed one of the organizers of the event. You can check out more about the festival here.

SF Tour Boats to Run on Vegetable-Oil-Like Fuel

In what’s being declared an “environmental breakthrough,” San Francisco’s tour boats and ferries are about to run on a new type of fuel, one whose ingredients come from good ol’ veggies. Would you expect anything less of San Francisco? The renewable diesel fuel is a combination of fat, vegetable oils and grease. SF Gate reported on how we can expect conversions to the new fuel to be complete by the end of next year.

San Francisco Could Set a Precedent to Fight Rising Sea Levels

Leave it to San Francisco to already be on top of fighting climate change. WIRED reported on an interesting mission going on at Ocean Beach, one that involves truckloads of sand. It turns out that sand is purposely being dumped on the south end of the beach to fight erosion and assist the area in adapting to the inevitable.
