Leave it to an art museum to throw the best parties. Andy Warhol — who’s got more than a few pieces in SFMOMA — was famous for his outrageous and enchanting soirees at the Factory, where the Velvet Underground, John Lennon and Nico would sometimes make an appearance. Now our very own modern art museum is throwing their biennial Modern Ball, SFMOMA’s biggest fundraising party of the year, featuring electronic music darlings ODESZA as the headliners of the Post-Modern Party.

Unless you’ve been living behind a Duchamp urinal for the past few years, you know that the museum closed for its groundbreaking expansion. Most San Franciscans have a deep connection to the museum: it has a great permanent collection, always-fascinating exhibitions, one of the best gift shops in town and is possibly the best place to go on a date during the daytime. (Trust me.) So the museum’s closure during the last few years has been like an arrow shot through the heart.

But it turns out that the long wait was worth it, as the new SFMOMA is even more vibrant than ever before. The new Pritzker Center for Photography is the largest space dedicated to the interpretation, exhibition and study of photography in any art museum in the United States. At the new entry on Howard Street, patrons are greeted by a monumental Richard Serra sculpture. A massive Sol LeWitt wall drawing populates the art-filled, free-to-the-public ground floor. Moreover, there’s a new ground-floor restaurant, a renovated cafe on the fifth floor and a new Sightglass coffee bar on the third floor.

In other words, it’s change worth celebrating. So while the soiree has sold out, SFMOMA is giving away 20 pairs of tickets to the Modern Ball’s infamous late-night Post-Modern Party. The party is on May 12, goes from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and is for those ages 21 and up. Best of all, the proceeds benefit SFMOMA’s education programs, which give teachers and kids access to art. Win tickets at www.sfmoma.org/wintix, or learn more about the whole shebang here.
