FRIDAY FIVE

Unlike the rest of the country, in San Francisco, Labor Day weekend marks the beginning of summer, not the end. The fog slowly starts to dissipate; the sunshine makes it warm enough for you to leave your jacket at home; and outdoor activities become more desirable weekend activities again.
It’s tempting to flee the city on Labor Day weekend, but it’s also exciting to stay, since the fog has taken its own summer vacation. If you do choose to stay in the city this holiday, a hike is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Here are our favorite scenic hikes, whichg will make you forget that you’re in the middle of a big city.
1. Hike up Twin Peaks
There is a reason why Twin Peaks is a popular spot for commercials these days — it’s beautiful. An urban hike up to Twin Peaks gives those who are willing to brave the steep incline breathtaking views of both the city and the Pacific Ocean. If you’re a morning person, it’s worth it to go at sunrise to watch the sun light up the city. If not, any time of day will be just fine. Simply take the N to Carl and Cole to start your adventure. Walk up Cole Street to 17th; make a left; and follow the signs to Twin Peaks.
TBI tip: Grab a coffee at Wooden Cafe or brunch at Zazie beforehand.
2. Lovers’ Lane in the Presidio
The Presidio is a special place in San Francisco. From the park’s eucalyptus trees to the baby redwoods, it’s full of nature and true tranquility. A stroll through Lovers’ Lane is one to do with your lover, however you define that, and is accessible at any time during the sunlight. The trail begins at Funston Avenue and Presidio Boulevard and is a one-mile walk each way.
TBI tip: Brunch where the Marina meets the Presidio afterward.
3. Lands End Labyrinth
Who would have thought that in the early 19th century the ruins of a communal bath would become one of the most visited spots in the city? Lands End gives visitors dramatic views of the ocean and insight into the marine life where the ocean meats bay. And truth be told: it never gets old. The labyrinth is by far the most sacred part of traipsing through Lands End, though.
TBI tip: Don’t just gawk at the labyrinth—walk it. It’s a winding maze on what feels like the edge of the world.
4. Tank Hill Steps
The Tank Hill steps are like Twin Peaks but for those who truly can’t stand the crowds. Again, start in Cole Valley and take Schrader Street all the way up to the top. Make a left when you can’t walk any further, and within 10 minutes you’ll be greeted by winding steps. Follow them to the top, and be prepared for a gust of wind—and a gorgeous view—to welcome you.
TBI tip: Pack a lunch and enjoy it on the bench (you’ll know what we’re talking about when you get up there).
5. Mount Sutro Forest
Mount Sutro Forest is so underrated. There are multiple trails in this urban oasis for one to traverse and disconnect from the hectic energy of the city, becoming one with nature. The trail starts on Stanyan Street up the hill from Parnassus Avenue. Once you see the steps, follow them into the forest, and you’ll have plenty of trail options.
TBI tip: Check out the Summit Trail, and don’t miss the views of the ocean.
