They say Thursday is the new Friday, but then what does that make Friday? Monday? In any case, I, for one, welcome the advent of the four-day weekend and my boss’s newly lowered expectations that nothing will actually get done on Friday.
Anyway, the four-day weekend also opens up new opportunities for going out. If you’re like most San Franciscans, Friday is for drinking; Saturday is for brunching; and Sunday is for hiking. What about Thursday, then? Since you’ll have to (at the very least) show up to work the next day, that rules out the bar. So here’s another idea: make Thursday night a night at the museum.
Thursday Nights at the Asian Art Museum are back. Every Thursday after 5:00 p.m., the price of admission to the museum is only $5, which gives you full access to the space — in addition to whatever Thursday-night special event is going on. Setting the price so low and staying open in the evening effectively eliminates the two least-cool aspects of a lot of museums: high prices and inconvenient closing hours.

Also, the Asian Art Museum’s Thursday Nights program has a lineup of interesting and, frankly, pretty out-there programs (and every Thursday night is different). First, there’s the Artists Drawing Club series (see the link for specifics), which brings local artists to the museum to use the space as a platform. Then there’s the TAKEOVER series, which is pretty much what it sounds like: visionaries like filmmaker H.P. Mendoza are invited to literally take over the museum for one evening. Tasting Menu focuses on luminaries in the food scene like Chairman Bao, their philosophies and their connections to the museum’s collection.
