Have you heard of the Church of 8 Wheels? I’m not a church goer, but this is one service you might actually see me at — it’s a ‘70s-style roller skating party inside of an abandoned church. Started by D. Miles, Jr., aka, the “Godfather of Skating in San Francisco,” he and his Holy Rollers have gathered at what was once Sacred Heart Church (on Filmore at Fell) for “rolligious” activities since 2013. With the permission of the buildings owners, they’ve been holding roller disco services for the public, playing old-school funk and disco tunes that sound better while wearing shoes with wheels.
Like many San Francisco houses of worship, Church of 8 Wheels is all-inclusive, no matter what your spiritual belief. Tonight, the church is hosting its Gay Night Roller Disco dedicated to the city’s LGBTQ community, and Thursday is guest DJ night. Both parties start at 7 and end at 10 p.m. Entry is $10, and skate rentals are $5.
