Money site site Mint.com examined transaction records from 16 million users to see how people in America’s 10 largest cities spent money in 2014. The Bay Area outspent every other city in five categories: restaurants, bars, gasoline, childcare, and clothing. That last, in particular, gave local credit cards a workout: San Franciscans shelled out more than $320 million for clothes last year, far exceeding the national average of $106.88 million. The mystery of how a city that spends so much can be so unfashionable remains unsolved.
