London Breed Wins Mayoral Race
The election was just a little over a week ago, but it feels like eons ago already. #Amiright? Indeed, the city of San Francisco’s unique ranked-choice voting system turned the mayoral election, which came to light after Ed Lee’s unexpected death, into a nail-biter. Every other day during the past week, there have been varying reports claiming that either Breed or her opponent and former state Senator Mark Leno was ahead. However, on Wednesday, Leno, who campaigned with Jane Kim in a campaign against Breed, conceded, leaving Breed to be the official winner. “Whether you voted for me or not,” Breed said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, “as mayor I’ll be your mayor too.”
New Report Highlights San Francisco’s Outrageous Cost of Living
Speaking of city news, it’s likely that one of Breed’s first agenda items will be to address the city’s rising cost of living. CBS reported a new study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, which released its annual Out of Reach report, which found that in order to afford a two-bedroom apartment in San Francisco, a person must make at least $60 an hour, or about $124,840 a year. According to the report, SF has the highest “housing wage” in the country.
California Faces Ballot Measure to Become Three Separate States
Calexit, the much-debated and fantasized idea in which the state of California would secede from the United States, is so 2016. However, as Curbed SF reports, there is another, related idea that will be on the ballot in November 2018—the Cal 3 ballot measure. Under this proposal, California will vote on whether or not to divide the state into three separate states—Northern California, Southern California and California. Yes, you read that correctly—this will be on the ballot in November. If you think there’s no way this could happen, just think back to the 2016 presidential election.
