Doesn’t it seem like every other week, headlines flood Twitter about how ungodly expensive it is to live in this city? Well, the last few days have been no exception. Sure, San Francisco is one of the expensive cities in this country. And yes, tech companies might have something to do with it. But when other cities start to report on how people can’t afford to drink coffee in San Francisco, we know the problem has reached an entirely new—and dangerous—level.
“I Can’t Even Afford a Cup of Coffee”
Perhaps it was a slow news day in Chicago, but on Thursday, its local CBS station published a story about how the “tech boom” is pushing out San Francisco residents. “I’ve been in San Francisco since the ’70s,” Meghan Sweet told CBS News. “And it was a wonderful place to be in my 20s and 30s and 40s, but now that I’m in my 60s, I mean, I can’t even afford a cup of coffee anymore.” Later in the story, CBS spoke to Charles Bililies of Souvla, a restaurant beloved by SF millennials, who said they have no waiters or servers to keep prices low (as in $13 for a salad). Who knew?
People Will Pay $2 Million for a Home “Ravaged” by Fire
Two million dollars for a burned building? I’ll take it! This is the attitude of some San Francisco homebuyers, according to Business Insider. According to the report, the home in question sold on June 27 for $2 million, even though its interior had been “ravaged” by a fire earlier this year. Prior to the fire, it was reportedly a “drug den.” The house is located in the Castro district, and potential buyers were told to “bring your contractor and imagination.”
San Francisco Woman Delivers Free Pizza to Homeless
In other news, people are finding creative ways to help the homeless in San Francisco. According to an ABC report, a San Francisco woman named Andrea Carla Michaels is “on a mission” to deliver free pizza to homeless people. “My philosophy is food first,” she said. “If you eat, you can think. And if you can think, then you can get help, or you can feel less desperate or find a safer place to sleep.” I think we can all agree that we could use more pizza angels in this city. #Amirite?
