Even if you’re not a fan of astrology, we can all admit that 2020 has been a real planetary doozy (eclipses, conjunctions, and Saturn transits, oh my!). Based on some of the upcoming transits — including Saturn’s move into Aquarius and the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in December — it doesn’t appear that things will be letting up any time soon. Check out Oakland-based astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo to hear her unpack these events in more detail on her podcast.
And, while it might look like your summer plans just got a bit more awkward and social distance-y thanks to California’s Lockdown 2.0, there are still ways to have fun, stay safe, and support your favorite local businesses while we ride out the second half of this accursed year.
Since the stars have already foretold so much doom and gloom that’s played out these past few months, you may want to listen to what they have to say, even in matters as simple as your choice of dinner plans. To aid in your divined path, we created this list of Bay Area takeout options, tailored to every sun sign because you are all special and deserving of love in your own unique ways — but also wear a mask and wash your damn hands.
Leo ♌️
If Missouri is The Show-Me State, Leo is The Me-Show Sign. These spotlight-grabbers will be celebrating their birthdays this month, which means it will be all eyes on Leo (that is, even more than usual). The ultimate influencer star sign, Leos need food that is healthy enough to keep them looking fit for their TikTok and YouTube videos, while flashy enough to post on Instagram.
To align with their high-profile lifestyle, I chose two restaurants that are known for their healthy eats and stylish presentation.
1. Kitava
2011 Mission Street, San Francisco
If you’re wondering where to take your nephew who is allergic to everything, or your Leo friend on a diet, then look no further than this keto-friendly, gluten-free, Whole30 Approved, nut-free, refined sugar-free — you get the idea — restaurant in the Mission. This place has everything for the most finicky Leo friend-of-a-friend in your contacts list. Plus, with photogenic presentations of bright veggies and grains, these takeout dishes will satisfy the craving of any attention-hungry lion.
Order on their website for pickup or delivery.
2. The Well Organic Kitchen
5443 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland
East Bay Leos looking to detox can head over to the Well Organic Kitchen for a range of uber-healthy options. The Well has smoothies in every color of the rainbow, including dark gray with their Charcoal Coconut smoothie that has mango, banana, almond-coconut milk, and chia seeds in addition to the activated charcoal powder that gives it its healthy kick.
The rest of their menu consists of colorful grain bowls and California fusion goodies like their shiitake tacos and pickled beet congee. All menu items are marked gluten-free or vegan for easy browsing. Plus, the Well’s retail store is filled with teas and tonics, including their Mushroom Uncoffee, perfect for creating an influencer-worthy sanctuary at home.
Go to their website for takeout and delivery menus.
Virgo ♍️
Virgos, the sun sign most likely to be a serial killer or Beyoncé, has probably spent the last few months organizing their pen drawers and adding color-coded filters to all their Gmail accounts. This earth sign is all about clean living — literally.
To keep them from breaking out into hives while unpacking and eating their takeout, I chose two delicious sushi restaurants as my recommendations for this earth sign, because sushi is the ultimate in neat-and-tidy food to eat at home.
1. Shizen
370 14th Street, San Francisco
Virgos will not only love the design of their sushi and izakaya offerings from Shizen’s takeout menu, but they will also embrace the restaurant’s mission of creating a cleaner ocean by forgoing the traditional use of fish in their all-vegan fare.
Call (415)678–5767 between 4–9 p.m. for takeout.
2. Geta Sushi
165 41st Street, Oakland
An in-person visit to the somewhat chaotic Geta Sushi — with their handwritten signs, limited seating, and no-reservations policy — may make the average Virgo implode with anxiety. Virgos will be delighted that they can use the pandemic as an excuse to do takeout, so they can avoid crowds and worrying about whether the tables were wiped down before them. Instead, these earth signs can safely unwind with one of Geta’s bento boxes or any of the daily roll and nigiri offerings in the comfort (and privacy) of their own homes.
Call (510)653–4643 for takeout.
Libra ♎️
This social butterfly of the zodiac isn’t spending quarantine at home binging on old TV shows (all by themselves like a nerd). More likely, you will find Libras with their calendars booked full of Zoom calls, livestreaming dance classes with Ryan Heffington, or out in Dolores Park having a picnic inside one of the spray-painted circles with their quarantine pods.
For this social sun sign, I am recommending Korean BBQ, which is perfect for the choice-averse Libra. Both these restaurants offer lots of small plates, family-style entrees, and banchan, or side dishes, which are ideal for sharing with your entire pod.
1. Han Il Kwan
1802 Balboa Street, San Francisco
Libras will enjoy knowing that pre-pandemic, this Zagat-rated Bay Area institution used to be packed to the brim with literal busloads of people at a time. Now you can still enjoy the ample portions of Korean BBQ and banchan that made this spot famous, with the ease of dining at home.
Call (415)752–4447 for takeout.
2. Pyeong Chang Tofu House Oakland
4701 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland
With lots of choices for both carnivores and vegans at this Temescal hot-spot, Libras might want to bring a friend to help them decide on their final order. Right now, the restaurant is offering 20% their signature tofu soups with any order called in as well as 50% off soju.
Order online or call 510–658–9040 for takeout and delivery.
Scorpio ♏️
Scorpio, much like their fellow water sign Cancer, is relatively unphased when you tell them they can’t leave the house for months at a time. You won’t find these natural introverts on the lockdown picket line, demanding salons open to give them haircuts. Rather, they are more likely to watch a YouTube video to learn how to cut their own hair, then take a sultry new profile pic when they are done. The perfect takeout food for Scorpios has a similar vibe: It gives them a sense of control, it offers them a chance to flex their intellectual prowess, and it makes them feel sexy in the process.
As a result, for my Scorpio brethren, I chose two online cooking schools that allow Scorpios to do all those things while creating delicious meals.
1. 18 Reasons
What’s more sensual and empowering than learning how to make steamed clams in tomato and chili sauce, or learning about the Flavors of the Balearic Islands (think figs). Control freak Scorpios will love that they get to make the food themselves (after all, who could do it better?) and can look forward to showing it off on their next IRL date post-pandemic in 2025. Plus, 18 Reasons is a nonprofit that uses part of its proceeds to give low-income Bay Area residents free cooking classes.
Check out the calendar here to sign up for their Zoom classes.
2. ChefsFeed
One of the unexpected but happy side effects of the pandemic is all of the online courses that have sprung up and are now accessible to people around the world at the double-click of a mouse. This is certainly true for restaurants and chefs who have gone online to reach new audiences. Want to learn how to make the perfect vegetarian breakfast biscuit sandwich from a restaurant in Chicago? Or how about pomme frites with a chef in Miami? On ChefsFeed, a self-proclaimed media platform for foodies, you can sort by dietary needs, date, and cuisine type to find tutorial videos and livestream classes. The wide range of options and their control over the process are sure to satisfy a Scorpio’s deep hunger for knowledge — and food.
Sagittarius ♐️
Sagittarians love adventure and travel, so they will be feeling especially stymied as California reenters lockdown this summer. These fire signs crave stimulation and don’t back down from a challenge (read: fight). In between taking long drives up and down the 101 and binging foreign films on MUBI, Sags can channel their hunger for the exotic by eating their way through the multicultural smorgasbord of takeout dining that the Bay Area has to offer.
For these distinctive signs, I chose a couple of restaurants that offer big portions and flavor palettes with a kick.
1. Eko Kitchen
167 11th Street, San Francisco
Nothing says a friendly “I am over cooking for you” like buying soups and stews in bulk to serve for your family or significant other. Luckily Sagittarians can find relief from their domestic malaise and satisfy their craving for novel experiences by picking up a few of Eko Kitchen’s premade soups and stews, inspired by Nigerian comfort food. Containers come in either 32-ounce or 64-ounce containers and in a range of options, from catfish and goat meat to turkey and chicken-based recipes. You can also order Nigerian spices from their online Village Market.
Call (410)344–3362 or order through UberEats for takeout.
2. Kingston 11
2270 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland
East Bay Sagittarians can fight fire with fire by wolfing down some jerk chicken or curry goat from the Jamaican California fusion restaurant Kingston 11. The community-minded restaurant is offering individual orders as well as bulk takeout orders during the pandemic, which means you can stock your backup freezer with all the seasoned meat dishes you can handle.
Order by calling (510)465–2558 or emailing.
Capricorn ♑️
Capricorns, as the most sensible and high-achieving sign of the zodiac, probably already have spreadsheets filled with their favorite restaurants and won’t need this article. They might read it anyway just to make sure they are up to date on Bay Area takeout options so they can lord it over their less-informed “friends,” or perhaps troll me in the comment section about how wrong I am.
To appease these hard-to-please earth signs — because, after all, I cherish my cold Capricorn moon — I chose two of the most buzzworthy, aspirational restaurants of the moment that I could find.
1. The Vault Garden
555 California Street, San Francisco
Located under a local temple of capitalism known as the Bank of America Tower in the epicenter of San Francisco’s FiDi, the newly opened Vault Garden is a perfect Capricornian alternative to that pedestrian takeout the other signs will be eating. The outdoor restaurant opened up its massive outdoor dining space in June in response to the pandemic, with 30 socially distanced tables and a menu that pulls light fare and an extensive cocktail menu from its indoor sister restaurant The Vault.
The sign of the mountain goat will love the feel of wind as it whips through the neighboring skyscrapers and across their cheeks as they enjoy the high-priced cocktails. Note to Capricorns: Remember to bring gloves for those chilly SF nights, unless your hands are as unfeeling as your hearts.
Reservations are recommended.
2. Madcap
198 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, San Anselmo
East Bay Caps will be happy to hear that Michelin-star rated Madcap is now open for curbside pickup and patio dining. They are offering their signature farm-to-table cuisine in two family-style menus a day at $45 and $50 a person, as well as bottles of wine from their cellar.
Curbside pickup between 5–7 p.m. Order on their website or by email.
Aquarius ♒️
Of all the zodiac signs, Aquarius is the most “special.” They are unlike you or me and want to make sure you know it. Not only are they flashier dressers with their faux fur and vegan leather accessories, but they are also better than us with their hours spent volunteering, their annual attendance at Burning Man, and their general striving for a new utopian society.
Thanks to their Aquarian dyed-in-the-vegan-wool altruism, any takeout restaurants I recommend better be 100% vegan, eco-friendly, and use locally sourced ingredients. It’s a tall order, but consider the below offerings as a challenge accepted.
1. Gracias Madre
2211 Mission Street, San Francisco
At Gracias Madre, Aquarians can feel confident that they are upholding their highest vegan/sustainable selves while curing their hangovers with Mexican food like the rest of us. The restaurant, run by the founders of the consciousness-raising Café Gratitude, uses only locally sourced ingredients to create their ultra-healthy twists on traditional Mexican dishes.
Order online through almost all takeout apps.
2. Gay4U
1327 Peralta Street, Oakland
Gay4U, a new-ish vegan pop-up restaurant started by the chef of Hella Vegan Eats, is so Aquarian (revolutionary, cool, queer) that it will make even its edgiest customers feel like old farts (or maybe it’s just me). With their Instagram-only online presence, and an eclectic menu of American comfort food, Asian-fusion, and healthy stuff like kale, they are pushing the envelope of what you can and should expect from your local eatery. In addition to dishes like mac n’ cheese and the Gay4U Burger made with seitan, they offer Baked4U, an ever-changing menu of tasty vegan desserts. Plus, trans POC always eat free.
Pisces ♓️
Sorry to interrupt you from your rage nap, Pisces. As the pandemic and political tensions continue to build to an uncomfortable climax (are we there yet?), these gentle souls are most likely spending their quarantine rewatching Gilmore Girls, doing DIY craft projects and drinking a bottle of wine every night.
If growing up as a Scorpio in a household of all Pisces taught me anything, it’s that Pisces are okay with eating the same thing every time they go out to eat, preferably at the same restaurant. Perhaps it’s because their grip on reality is so light that these fish like the comfort of a known quantity, even if that means ordering the same mediocre chicken tikka masala again and again for years (you know who you are).
I am not going to go out on a limb here and offer some exotic cuisine for my water sign friends, because why waste a good meal on someone who is happy going to Quiznos every day? Instead, I chose some of my absolute favorite comfort food spots in the Bay that are sure to offer Pisces a new dish to obsess over for years to come.
1. Puerto Alegre
546 Valencia Street, San Francisco
Puerto Alegre, or ‘Legs as my friends and I like to call it, is a San Francisco institution that has been serving the same delicious enchiladas poblanas with the same greasy side of beans and rice and the same affordable-but-delicious margaritas for over 50 years. It is hands-down my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Francisco for the comforting levels of grease in the dishes and its general lack of pretension, despite the occasional facelift or menu reprint every couple of years.
Available for pickup and delivery.
2. Pho King
207 E 18th Street, Oakland
Often nothing is as comforting to me as a giant, steaming bowl of pho ga, or Vietnamese chicken soup with rice noodles. Pho King is my favorite takeout pho because the chicken is tender, not overcooked and dry like so many places, and comes with a light, flavorful broth. Plus, an extra star for the cheeky name (pronounced “Fa-King”).
Call for takeout (510)444–0448 or order on Doordash.
Aries ♈️
Okay, calm down Aries, of course, I would get to you. Aries is both a fire sign and the first in the zodiac wheel. That means this sun sign is all about individuality and the self. What this often means is that Aries are not afraid to stand out or speak their mind at whatever loud volume they deem necessary. During the pandemic, they are most likely working out at 5 a.m. every morning, then bragging about it for the rest of the day over Zoom calls to their friends and co-workers. When they go out to eat, they want something that won’t waste their time. Bring them quality, whole ingredients and a dash of excitement.
For these intense individuals, I chose two Indian restaurants that, with their bold flavors, are sure to match Aries’ fiery personality and love of the dramatic.
1. Dosa
Locations all over the Bay Area and Peninsula
A long-time staple of Bay Area cuisine, this South Indian restaurant has been awarded the Michelin rating of Bib Gourmand 11 times — something that is sure to impress the status-conscious Aries. Over the years, Dosa has gone from a single restaurant that introduced the Bay Area to the dosa, a flatbread made with fermented rice batter, to an empire of chic restaurants and now even retail products. Body-conscious Aries can even order keto-friendly and gluten-free dishes, all the while feeling good knowing that all their restaurants source ingredients from the local farmers markets.
Order online for takeout and delivery.
2. Vik’s Chaat
2390 4th Street, Berkeley
Another long-time staple of Bay Area Indian cuisine, Vik’s Chaat is offering their chaats, curries, dosas, and spiced meats for takeout during the pandemic. Their rich menu is filled with flavorful treats, including their signature chaat dishes like Dahi Papdi Chaat, a northern-Indian treat made with papdis crackers, potatoes, and garbanzo beans smothered with yogurt and chutneys. This dish is meant to have a cooling effect on hot days and fire signs. Plus, enterprising Aries can stop next door at Vik’s Market and grab spices and other goodies that will allow them to show off their cooking skills at home.
Order online for takeout and delivery.
Taurus ♉️
Taureans can’t resist a cozy night in. This earth sign is ruled by Venus, so while they have a strong drive and are often considered the most stubborn sign in the zodiac (just make sure you stay on their good side), they really know how to indulge in earthly delights with their loved ones. This means Taureans have probably spent the pandemic alternating between going on long hikes in Marin and preparing decadent meals for their roommates.
To assist Taureans in continuing to live their best lives, I chose restaurants that are grounded in their local communities and ingredients, and offer a feast for the senses.
1. Palio
640 Sacramento Street, San Francisco
Palio, a family-run Italian restaurant based in San Francisco’s FiDi since 1990, is a perfectly Taurean destination with its carb-heavy menu of pizzas and pastas. Nothing says “treat yourself” like their eye-catching Spaghetti Nera: a handmade squid ink pasta topped with calamari, sea urchin butter (what even is that), and ricotta. Gluten-intolerant and keto dieters, you’ll probably want to go somewhere else, as most of these menu items do not come with substitutions.
Order online, and by phone at 415–395–9800 ext. 1.
2. Chez Panisse
1517 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley
What is more Taurean than a restaurant that has built its reputation on locally grown ingredients, decadent meals, and an indulgent approach to simplicity? During the pandemic, Chez Panisse has canceled all of their highly coveted, months-in-advance reservations for the foreseeable future (gasp!). Luckily for Alice Waters fans, they are selling farm boxes and a selection of pantry items. You can grab dishes like spit-roasted chicken, green and yellow romano beans in gremolata sauce, a pint of summer berry ice cream — all things that sound ridiculous for the price but are sure to make you drool reading about them.
Order pantry goods on their Square site.
Gemini ♊️
Geminis, a sign governed by Mercury, the ruler of communication, will most likely skim this article while listening to a podcast about lucid dreaming at 1.5x speed, then forward it to five friends and two frenemies with a row full of emojis followed by “lol.” This cerebral, loquacious sign has probably spent the last few months in quarantine blocking and unblocking people on Instagram out of boredom and taking online MBA courses in the evening after they finish their day job as a TikTok influencer.
To satisfy the Gemini’s active mind, I chose two restaurants that take a smart approach to their menu.
1. Maven
598 Haight Street, San Francisco
Geminis will love the smart and sassy pandemic-era menu, which starts with the header “Maven to go menu fuck you virus.” The restaurant is offering takeout for brunch and dinner, including a sampling of plates like pork sliders, grilled corn elote covered in cheese, and its famous Maven Burger. Maven is also selling a shortlist of to-go cocktails like the “Oxford Comma,” which is sure to pique the Gemini’s nerdier side at $20 for a pair. One cocktail for each of their two faces, perhaps?
For takeout, call (415) 829 7982 or go to Maven’s Facebook page.
2. FOB Kitchen
5179 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland
This self-deprecatingly named Filipino restaurant (FOB stands for “fresh off the boat”) docked itself late last year in its brick-and-mortar location in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland and has been getting rave reviews ever since. The sheer amount of fried items on the menu is enough to give Geminis something to talk about (as if they need another topic of conversation). Add to that their signature Fresh Off the Boat Slushie drink (nonalcoholic or with a shot for $4 more) which is made with coconut milk, lime juice, pandan syrup, and red bean dust, and air signs will have to tie themselves to the table to keep from floating away with excitement.
Order on the Toast app for takeout and delivery.
Cancer ♋️
Cancers are the cuddle-bugs of the zodiac. Much like Taureans, this sign is such a homebody that they may or may not have noticed that the world has been on lockdown for months and that most people are not happy about it. What’s all the fuss about? wonders Cancer as they turn on Enya and run themselves another bubble bath.
Cancers are happiest when they can “nest” with their significant other (read: mind meld), so if anything, Covid-19 takeout dining culture has created more infrastructure for their “Netflix and chill” lifestyle. To accommodate, I chose two restaurants that offer meal kit-style takeout, designed to be whipped up at home, because what’s cozier than cooking for your beloved?
1. Nopalito
306 Broderick Street, San Francisco (Sunset location closes this July)
Nopalito is offering two-person Mexican dishes like carnitas, which are made to be heated at home and come with sides of tortillas, rice, and beans. Each take-home kit is $40, perfect for a romantic date night at home (aka every Cancer date night ever).
Available through takeout or delivery.
2. Zachary’s Chicago Pizza
Takeout only at one of their five locations in the East Bay.
Order classic Chicago-style deep-dish pies from this East Bay staple to go, or grab a couple of pizzas “half-baked” and make them at home whenever you want. Note to Cancers: Make sure to set a timer so you don’t get lost in wine-and-bath time and almost burn your house down (again).
