We’ve all been there — we joke about how broke we are, how we’re eating pasta every night, how we dream of a happy hour that serves $1 Tecate. Turns out, our bitching is justified: San Francisco was just named the worst city to live in if you want to save money.
According to a study by GOBankingRates — which looked at “sales tax, median home and condo value, median monthly rent, median income, unemployment rates, and gas prices” — San Franciscans just can’t keep cash in the bank. And we’re not the only California city on the top 10 list either; Los Angeles, Irvine, Oakland, San Jose, Long Beach, Fremont, Stockton, and Santa Ana are also bleeding wallets dry. (New York was the only city not in the Golden State).
I know, I know, this isn’t surprising given that average median rent in the city hovers around $3,460, but c’mon, nine out of 10 cities are in California? To put a positive spin on all this, note that some of the best cities to save money in are Anchorage, Lincoln, Omaha, Wichita, and Fort Wayne, where $4 toast and on-demand marijuana delivery are probably hard to come by. So count your blessings, SF.
Interestingly, WalletHub also just named San Francisco the eighth hardest working city in America (number one in California). Next time you’re waiting in line for your $14 poached egg think about how long and how hard you worked to get there. Just kidding, we’re all definitely eating Cheerios on a mattress bought off Craigslist.
