We all know the narrative way too well — San Francisco has become totally unaffordable and is becoming more and more like Manhattan every day. There is no question that the cost of living in the city has become utterly ridiculous, but we can still take solace in the fact that we have not yet hit New York City levels. The folks at NeighborhoodX recently put together a map and a chart comparing popular SF neighborhoods to popular NYC neighborhoods. The results may surprise you. The top five most expensive neighborhoods, when you compare SF to NYC, are all NYC neighborhoods. Although SF still has the most expensive rental market, when it comes to owning a home in the most popular neighborhoods, you’ll still be spending more in NYC.
