The Number of Affordable Housing Units Built in the Mission is Shocking

Amid all the protests and think pieces about how unaffordable the Mission has become, a new map shows exactly how much affordable housing new developments will bring to the neighborhood — only about 25 percent.

The map, released by the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, shows proposed and executed developments since 2003 (indicated by purple dots), as well as projects still pending approval (indicated by red dots). Regarding development projects already completed or under construction, only 34 are Below-Market Rate (BMR) units, or a mere seven percent of all units.

On the other end of the development spectrum, 1,132 units are being proposed, with only 95 being BMR units and further potential for 247 new affordable units, bringing the total amount of possible affordable housing to 25.7 percent. The tables representing these numbers are below.

Although there’s no direct correlation noted, many areas where there is proposed and executed housing are near large areas of no-fault evictions. The map shows there’s been a total of 1,504 evictions since 1997, which include Ellis Act evictions, Owner Move-In evictions (OMI), and demolitions. The numbers will make your mouth drop: there have been 774 OMI evictions and 595 Ellis Act evictions. There’s no doubt that the Mission is losing part of its cultural heritage, and 25 percent affordable housing is not enough to satisfy the needs of those being evicted.

This map proves what most San Franciscans already know: almost every area of the city is changing, making way for pricey condos, and breathing a sigh of relieft that it’s still possible to find one-bedroom apartments for under $2,500. Meanwhile, landlords use legal loopholes to increase people’s rent.

It’s a strange feeling, remembering why it’s great to live here while worrying if you’re next to be evicted.
