But first some good news:
- There’s a new district in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The Compton’s Transgender Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (TLGB) District comprises six blocks in the Tenderloin and was named to celebrate its history as a hub for the trans and gender-nonconforming communities. Having the “T” come first in the district’s name is a nod to that history. “By creating the Compton’s TLGB District, we are honoring this vibrant community built by transgender people and are sending a message to the world that trans people are welcome here,” said supervisor Jane Kim in a press release.
Otherwise…
- In the wake of Trump’s executive order on Saturday banning travel from seven Muslim-majority nations, tens of thousands showed up at airports around the country to protest. Likewise, hundreds of refugees found themselves suddenly left in the lurch, confused and in many cases detained mid-travel. In the Bay Area, the protest at San Francisco Airport was so big that it broke Sunday ridership records for BART.
- Since his election, pundits have been playing up the Trump-Nixon parallels. (Tricky Dick even famously wrote a letter to a younger Donald, which Donald framed and hung in the Oval Office.) Trump’s Monday-night firing of acting attorney general Sally Yates has been dubbed the “Monday Night Massacre,” a parallel to Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre.” TIME Magazine has a good, short history lesson on how the Saturday Night Massacre compares to Monday night’s.
- Glenn Greenwald on the immigration ban: “It is difficult to envision anything that helps ISIS’s overarching objective [m]ore than Trump’s immigration ban aimed at Muslims while privileging Christian refugees.”
- Besides ISIS cheering on the immigration ban, you know who else was overjoyed? White nationalists. What good company the president keeps.
