THE WEEKEND WIND-DOWN

San Francisco’s smattering of car-free street corridors is among the few hyperlocal niceties to emerge from the past two years since the pandemic began. Unquestionably, the Upper Great Highway has become not only our favorite portion of SF’s Slow Streets Program — but it’s also y’all’s, too. And the Great Walkway’s new hybrid model, which sees the roadway entirely car-free during the weekend and on holidays, before opening up for traffic through the workweek, will now also include food trucks setting up shop Saturdays and Sundays.
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced this week that a three-month pilot program for food trucks would begin on the Upper Great Highway during days the roadway is closed to vehicle traffic. Viva Vegan, a plant-based burger truck, and the organic coffee and matcha company California Kahve — which serves its drinks for a vintage caravan, complete with neon signage — will be positioned at the Great Highway at Taraval Street this weekend.
California Kahve will be open on the car-free corridor from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays; Viva Vegan is serving its meat-free morsels from 10:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m on Saturdays, though closing an hour earlier at 1:30 p.m. for Sundays.
More trucks could also be coming to the program before the end of the year.
“The [SF Parks and Recs Department] will continue to expand the pilot program through its rolling request for proposals process,” reads a statement from the department. “For more information on how to participate, email Brian DeWitt at brian.dewitt@sfgov.org.”
So… think about winding down from the week while sipping on an espresso (or tea of your choice) and just vibing — breathtaking view of the Pacific and all.
