Friday Five

Life is pretty weird right now. We’re all doing the best we can. Despite not being able to leave our homes, we’ve managed to still have some sort of a social life (hello, virtual dance parties). But it’s only natural to miss San Francisco’s nightlife scene, even more so since we have no idea when we’ll be allowed to partake in it again. It’s crazy how we used to complain about crowded, sweaty bars and now we bet you’d give anything to pay $15 for a cocktail to be spilled all over you.
The good news is, SF has approved local restaurants to sell alcohol, including cocktails, to customers for pickup and delivery. If you’re tired of making your own gin and tonics on Friday (or Monday) nights in quarantine, we suggest supporting a local business and feeling fancy with these five cocktails to-go.
1. Brunch Mimosas from Zazie
Zazie is a beloved brunch staple, and sadly, this global pandemic is really taking its toll on this Cole Valley establishment (see its GoFundMe). If you need a little Zazie in your life, (don’t we all?) consider recreating your own Zazie brunch at home. The eatery is serving its full brunch menu from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. if you want to double up in a day — we don’t blame you. For brunch, you can also order mimosa kits for $30, which includes a bottle of champagne and either mango, orange, or cranberry juice. For an extra $5, you can get stemless champagne flutes, too. The restaurant is doing curbside pickup; no delivery. Call 415–564–5332 to place your order.
2. Elda
Six Negronis for $72? What about 10 old-fashioneds for $100? If you’re quarantined with a bunch of roommates right now, ordering takeout or delivery from Elda is the closest you’ll get to starting a house party. Located in the Mission, this relatively new bar was known for its airy ambiance and California-style drinks. Fortunately, it’s still serving booze via takeout and delivery. You can still get a delicious desert drifter (tequila, housemade strawberry-sage shrub, lemon juice, absinthe, and salt) or a free and easy, hibiscus-infused vodka drink. Let’s get the quara-drinks flowing.
Psst…. hey… come a little closer…. is your happy hour glass a little empty!? Don’t stress because WE DELIVER. 🚗 🚲 🏍 🛴🦼🛵🚁.

3. Word A. Café
In the pre-Covid-19 world, this café was relatively new on San Francisco’s streets. It opened as a coffee shop in the Bayview district in 2018, and then turned into a full restaurant and bar, in addition to hosting live music performances, art shows, book and poetry readings, and sometimes even comedy. Known for its southern-style biscuits and creative cocktails, this place was a happening brunch spot, too. Lucky for us, it’s still offering takeout during this trying time — and to-go cocktails. In addition to classics like margaritas, mimosas, and martinis, you can order New Orleans Solidarity cocktails, like the Kat Five Hurricane, which is your choice of rum, lime juice, Grenadine, orange juice, and a splash of soda for $8 (or $6 before 6 p.m. for happy hours).
Word Café & Bistro (5114 3rd Street)
4. Rye Bar
Located in the Tenderloin, Rye Bar — which is 15 Romolo’s pop-up bar — is offering bottled cocktails and drink kits. According to their Instagram, you can get a $10 bottled Negroni delivered for $10. If you order enough cocktails, over $100, you get free delivery. They’re also offering a “rotating mule” selection that varies each day, and is announced on its Instagram page. If you’re looking to get in the Easter spirit with a bottle of whiskey, you might want to consider their whiskey Easter basket for $35. For more details, we recommend calling them at 416–474–4448, or sending a message to their Instagram page.
5. The Morris
Remember slushies? Lucky for us, The Morris is offering boozy Chartreuse slushies to-go for $11. Founded by Paul Einbund, this Potrero Hill restaurant is usually an intimate high-scale diner with a loyal clientele. Certainly, many people are happy to see it’s still offering it’s delicious cuisine and signature cocktails, albeit curbside. In addition to Chartreuse slushies, you can get a mezcal craft cocktail, or a specialized Brandy beverage, depending on the day (each day has a new menu). Takeout orders can be made Tuesday through Saturday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
