Normally, news from CAL FIRE — California’s division devoted to fighting wildfires — is mostly negative and bleak at this time of the season. Multiple wildfires continue to rage throughout the state, in a season which many expect to be among the worst on record.

Today, though, there’s some good news out of a Cal Fire station in Pescadero, California. Cal Fire CZU took to Twitter on Sunday to share that they had found a lost dog, who had been dropped off at their station.

The firefighters’ tweet read in part “Do you recognize this lost doggo? She was dropped off at Station 59 in Pescadero today. Firefighters are seeking her humans.” (Twitter users identified the dog as a Great Pyrenees. The firefighters decked her out with a Cal Fire hat and a pair of sunglasses, one photo showed.)

Photos posted later showed the firefighters at the station bonding with the lost dog, and were captioned “there’s a major love connection happening very quickly at the fire station.”

Luckily, unlike many wildfire stories this time of year, this one has a happy ending. On Monday morning, Cal Fire CZU (which covers San Mateo County and Santa Cruz) posted that the dog’s owners had been found and that she had been reunited with her family. The station says that they took to the dog to a vet, “the vet scanned her, found [her microchip], then contacted her family.”

It’s wonderful to see California’s brave firefighters and other first responders fighting major wildfires and protecting property and life on our behalf. But it’s also special to see the more human side of these day-to-day heroes and to hear about a heartwarming story with such a happy ending.

Will this firehouse need to get a dog of their own, based on how quickly they formed a bond with the lost dog they rescued? That remains to be seen.
